Noob here...and need answers on AR-15 gas tube. Spent considerable time searching the forum and web but could not find an answer.

What is the purpose of a gas tube? Do all AR's have them? And finally, why do some choose to upgrade/change it out?

Thanks in advance for your input.

The Sweet Spot for Gas Piston Uppers is Carbine or Mid-Length 16" or shorter barrels, where AR Combat Accuracy is not sacrificed, and reliability is enhanced by the piston system.

I do not see the practical need for a High Precision - Target Gas Piston Upper since is no real benefit in the extra cost of a piston system, when these types of uppers are not put through rigorous treatment or they are not shot allot, where fouling and other issues from a DI system are even noticed or experienced.

Colt is developing a Piston System, and Hybrid DI-Piston System, as one of the possible replacements for the M4 Carbine, also known as the HK416 killer, and this speaks volumes of what the future holds for piston driven uppers.

We are currently looking at the next stage of development of our Addax Gas Piston Uppers, especially for Military Applications.

      I hope my input helps.

      Thanks,

I'm pretty excited about colts new offering. I just wished theyd give out the details of how the system works.

As far as I know their piston system is an updated version of their previous piston system they developed, and I believe one of the updates is a dfferent bolt carrier (like the 416).

I am wondering if the Hybrid model set up is like.

Yeah thats what I meant. I'm interested how they solved all the problems with putting a piston in the AR.

I'm guessing to reduce barrel flex they would have to move the expansion chamber and piston from the middle of the barrel to the front of the receiver and some how free float it from the barrel. And to solve the carrier tilt issue and to keep the forces more inline they would have to make it so the op-rod doesnt strike the carrier key but the instead attach to the middle of the carrier like the daewoo system we talked about. Atleast thats how I would do it.
