    barrel profiling

so there are many different profiles of barrels. they have these thin sections and then fatter sections at various parts of the barrel...

why are the cuts made where they are? where's stiffness important?

how come there are these slightly "shaved" sections usually near the muzzle device?

depends on what you're trying to do. Everything is a give/take between weight and benefit of accuracy.

M203 notch on the M4 profile. On the RECCE and SPR profiles, they're shaved down for the OPS Inc collar.

The original M16 had a skinny 'pencil' barrel. The M203 grenade launcher was designed for that. They later made the end of the barrel thicker. One story was that soldiers were using their rifles to pry open crates and bending the barrels. When they made the short M4 barrel, instead of changing the grenade launcher, they cut a notch in the barrel. Go figure. I guess they saved a few bucks in the short run.

I would recommend a medium contour 16 inch upper with a mid length gas syster for a good combination of portability, stifness and smooth cycling.

does that notch actually hurt performance? probably not right?

people always talk about different diameters under the handguards and this and that.

is it better to be thicker under the handguard or thicker outside the handguard? someone said noveske keeps the weight under the handguard closer to your body so the barrel doesn't feel as heavy, isn't that where you want the stiffness too? if you have a heavy end of the barrel that just makes things flop around on the less stiff "base" right?
