Something accurate yet inexpensive. I keep hearing about tikkas, but know nothing about them. I have an AR15 to hunt with but I hear you're not allowed to hunting with it in Cali.
Be aware that in certain zones/areas of California you can not use lead bullets anymore. You can only use solid copper bullets, like barnes.

if the mauser is accurate enough for you why change? just one more gun to keep clean, sighted-in and you'll need another $$$ for a scope unless you take the one off the mauser, then I bet you'll never shoot the mauser again=safe queen. otherwise a savage or marlin bolt action for cheap, tikka for mid range. get new friends, or a backbone.

i would have never bought a bolt action if the lead ban didn't force me to stop using LeverEvolution ammo in my marlin 336 (1 MOA accuracy). now it sits in my safe unused, waiting to be passed down to my boys in like 10 years.

use your extra cash for a gun "category" you don't already have, say a 17 or 22 for plinking or small game, or a heavy hitting cartridge for larger game, or a pistol or revolver....

Remington 700.... You can get a sps tactical in .308 for around 5-600 bucks. There are so many parts out there for these rifles that you could upgrade it for the rest of your life. You cant go wrong with a 700. Probably the most popular rifle around these days.

Very impressive groups from that Weatherby Sub-moa; they look just like the groups I get with my 700pss shooting Federal Match.

Im a big fan of the Rem 700 in .308, as I see the .308 as the overall best multipurpose cartridge. You should be able to hunt anything like a deer or boar with a .308. Personally I use my M1A Scout with a Burris 2-7x scope. A 30-06 is defiantly the largest caliber you will need down in the lower 48 as it will drop anything around these parts.

Basically bottom line is most 30 caliber rifles are well suited for the what you are hunting. This being said, there are countless tools for the job. A 98: sure why not. A lever action 30-30, Ive downed deer with mine. I even have a .410 from 1928 that my dad used to drop a deer in our back yard when I was 4. If you are planning on traveling to another part of the globe to hunt ie Africa or Alaska, just include the price of a .416 Rigby or the like in your travel expenses.

I actually came on here for advice about a rifle, not a lecture. Not sure about your friends, but we all like to razz each other about everything. All in good fun. That's all that I meant.

I like adding to my collection, since I have the money and I actually like taking my weapons apart and cleaning them. I figure the more I buy now, the less wear and tear on one gun, thereby allowing me to also pass them down to my kids in good condition.

There is no laws preventing you to hunt with a AR15, nor any limits on mag capacity(only limits on shotgun, correct me if i am wrong). On the other hand if you want more of a hunting rifle a remington 700 30-06 is a good choice.

good luck with the search, realistically now that most companies now use the latest adjustable triggers, there really isn't a HUGE difference, the fit and feel of each one is different and some will just be more comfortable.
