It looks like 30 carbine has the space already covered. I was shooting my M1 carbine last week and reminded myself of how nice it is e.g feature-less plus hi-cap preban mags, accurate and reliable, low recoil and light to carry. Shot 100 rounds of reloads with no FTF or FTE. 50 to 150 yds not much drop. I do enjoy my 357 and 44 lever guns but can't think of a compelling reason for rim cased semi-auto.
Does 357M really more than double it's energy out of a carbine vs handgun?

I own a .357 lever gun, but what could a SA .357 carbine do that an AK or .300 Blackout AR couldn't?

I think the newest offering for a 357 mag is the Ruger 77/357 bolt action rifle.

          Shoot 357 Magnum.

If a person already had a 357 revolver, and maybe 357 reloading dies, and didn't want to deal with another caliber, a rifle/carbine would make a nice addition, but then they wouldn't really need a semi-auto.

Now that I think about it, any rifle manufactured to shoot .357 mag should actually be chambered in .357 maximum. Just think about what a great little 150-200 yard brush gun that would be.

Would 38 Special work in a 357 Maximum chamber?

Logically speaking(and assuming that the semiauto action could handle it, and ignoring the availability issues), that would make sense. However, how many people really know what a .357 maximum is? It would take one hell of a marketing effort to get everyone to understand the performance difference, and that it's compatible with the other cartridges.

Again, just a guess on my part, but it seems like those same issues existed when it was introduced and weren't overcome.

I believe 357 Maximum guns tend to be able to shoot it. Of course, accuracy will likely suffer a little and if you fire much of it you'll need to clean before using the longer cases.

One of the advantages of reloading is ability to easily make ammo that is not common on a LGS shelf. The "rifle loads" that a lever gun can use are different than off the shelf handgun ammo. Here is data off Hogodonreloading.com website (they sell powder). Going with a slower burning powder and more of it, plus a lighter bullet yields a much faster velocity out of a carbine length barrel. I see they're testing out of 10" barrel for handgun data which is pretty generous but I did go with a heavier bullet for my handgun benchmark.
