AR-15 5.56 NATO better for HD, less penetrating -MA Police

Was reading this, according to the Massachusetts Police, the AR-15 was found to be better for HD because it penetrated walls less than hand guns and shot guns?

"Conversely, the most popular patrol rifle round, the 5.56mm NATO (.223 Remington) will penetrate fewer walls than service pistol rounds or 12 gauge slugs."

PS: I'm asking because I'm considering an AR-15 as a second line HD.

Wow, the Winchester Ranger 64g .223 barely penetrated one wall while the handgun and shotgun rounds penetrated 3 walls. O.O

That just puts common HD preconceptions upside down.

Now, the ultimate question is do you slaughter thy neighbor as well as your family or save your ears from the loud bang from a rifle?

which is exactly why we need cans

For that reason, I think pistol caliber carbines make a lot of sense for HD. They hit significantly harder than pistols of the same caliber, have significantly better practical accuracy, and are much quieter than either pistols or rifle caliber rifles.

              Drama?

Has anyone ever seen a case where bullets have penetrated a wall and harmed someone in another room or residence during a home-defense shooting?
True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

Not drama, but this thread alone will bring it regardless of my question or not. Now, with your post you can never say never.

This guy supports the idea of AR15 chambered in .223 to be the best HD type firearm.

...One of today’s best-known and most respected trainers in the art of gun fighting, retired Sgt./Maj. Kyle E. Lamb, spent more than 21 years with the U.S. Army—more than 15 years of which were in Special Operations. Lamb is one of those who has “been there and done that”—including combat operations such as the infamous “Blackhawk Down” incident in Mogadishu, Somalia, and throughout numerous tours in Iraq and Bosnia. He currently operates Viking Tactics as a military, law enforcement and civilian trainer teaching courses in tactical entry and the use of the carbine, among others.

Sgt. Major. Lamb's arguments make a lot of sense. Another thing is the visual deterrent of an AR15 pointed in your direction. The best battle is the one you win without firing a shot. With my 7 years military and 20+ years as an LEO (much as a firearms instructor), if I had to take my chances, I would rather face a man with a pistol than an AR15. Most people (cops included) can't hit sh@t with a handgun under stress.

Oh sure, if you are the 1/100th of the 1% that shoot a zillion rounds a month, you MAY have a better chance than the average. I say MAY, because those zillion rounds aren't being fired at someone who is actively trying to kill you, and your adrenaline and fight or flight response aren't in high gear giving you tunnel vision and tachpsychia.

My go to weapons are usually a 12 gauge and an M1 Carbine. The AR, AK, and PTR91 are in the safe.

A 9mm handgun at the end of my arm is louder than my AR with a linear compensator.

My 5+ pound M1 carbine launches a 110 JSP at 1970 FPS with 980 lbs ME. Best of all it is featureless and I have a 30 rounder in it and two 15s in a stock pouch. I dumped a 200 lb Blacktail buck with a single heart lung shot (at 97 long paces) with it in 1988. Now if I was going to be outside with a potential of 150 yards, 200 yards, or more, then it is my featureless AK.

Oh, I may have mentioned my dad used an Inland M1 Carbine on Iwo Jima in 1945. It brought him out in one piece. His brothers, Marines elsewhere in the PTO in WW2, also carried them and came home in one piece.

While it probably makes sense, there's no way I'm using my M1 carbines for this and have them ruined in the evidence locker
