    considering a 300 BLK

So I have a spare receiver sitting around and was thinking of building a 300 blackout with it, mostly just because I want to do something different than I already have. However I have been going back and forth between making a rifle or building it as a pistol, the receiver is an 80% and was never built into a rifle so Im good there just can't decide what I want. I don't have a AR pistol partly because I never saw the point in them but with the 300 I thought it might be fun, and found some good deals on barrels but they are only 7.5. Thoughts anyone? suggestions?

300 BLK usually shines in short barrels or suppresed. If anything build a pistol chambered it in. Suppresors in CA are hard to come by, so pistol is a almost definite answer.

I have never shot one but from the research I have done I thought that a pistol would be best, my biggest concern was is the 7.5 to short should I go to 10 inch.

        OP
If you do decide to build a 300 BLK rifle make sure the barrel you are going use is setup for a pistol length gas tube.
Most of the people I've talked to running carbine and rifle length gas tubes are having FTE problems with subsonic and light loaded ammo.

This picture is my wife's 300BLK with 16" barrel and she is having "0" problems with FTE's.

Also looking at building a 300blk pistol to go with my other 2 AR 5.56 pistols.

I prefer the 10" versions, more practical IMO. I say do it!

I've got a 10inch pistol with a SIG brace. It's become a favorite. Light, handy, not too loud, but hard(er) hitting. Beware of the Fiocchi ammunition. I've been getting a lot of blown primers and actually got a locked up trigger system because of them.

Interesting - I've shot thousands of rounds of the Fiocchi 150 grain supersonic. So far, no issues.

my friend and I both have 8.5 uppers. They work great and are very accurate for my needs. I can get hits in a 8" circle at 300yrds with my 3x ACOG. It's a fun caliber to play with. I only roll me own and either use 147/150gr plinkers or 125 TNT. Both shoot pretty well. For longer range, heavier is better. I have done some experimenting with 178 a-maxs supersonic. They work ok and are pretty accurate, but I need to do more testing to see if it is worth my time.

I want one myself, even without a suppressor subsonic has to be easier on the ears

Thanks I will keep that in mind when buying ammo. I think I am going to go a head and build the pistol. I just recently got into reloading so I am hoping a can start reloading the 300 as well and then there will be no problems, I hope, until then I will be buying ammo.

                      It's an 80% and you're considering going 300blk pistol....
Then, that is the right path, I say!
                      It'll be fun!

I'm currently in that planning stage too.
And I'm leaning towards making it a home defense gun, too.
Initially sounded dumb to deal with a BB and 10rd mags for HD...but a mag coupler and training could offset that.

Ive been inspired after recently discovering Lehigh Defense's new "Close Quarters" ammo. Their only other caliber in that line being 243....which seems funny.
but this CQ 300blk is a 78 gn aluminum tip/brass petal wonder that prolly spits out of an 8.5"at 2500+ fps?

I decided to go 7.5" or 8", but haven't decided on brake or linear comp. I could likely shoot faster on target with a brake, but linear comp seems smarter indoors.

I was gonna base plinks off 150 fmjbt's, like someone else mentioned, but I read of some good experiences of some running 30 carbine roundnose 110's?
That would be better to train with comparing to those hot Lehigh CQ rounds.

Partly my thoughts as well. I had the extra 80 percenter sitting around that I just never got around to doing anything with, partly because I got busy with work and partly didn't have the spare cash at the time. I had been considering a 300 just to give my self something different and a friend has a 7.5 barrel and upper that he wants to part with for cheep because he never finished his build, so I got to thinking of making a pistol for fun and to add for home defense. I went a head and got the barrel and upper today so it shouldn't be long and Ill have it all and put it together. My only concern was that a 7.5 inch barrel was to short but for the price I went a head and did it. Once its done ill get some pics up.

And thanks for the confidence boost you seem to know what your talking about and the fact that you were considering a 7.5 or 8 makes me feel better. I know a little about builds and the AR platform in general but still could stand to learn a lot more.

In CA, home defense for AR pistol isnt the best.. bb is the only question. But i would make a 10" 300blk to get its best potential. You dont gain much with longer and with shorter, you dont have enough either. Its a great round and is my fav. atm. I had a 7.5 but sold it and went for a 10. Thinking about gettting a 16" so i can slap it on my hunting rifle just so the rangers wont be bugging me about my 80% AR pistol.

Pistol for sure, real fun shooter but as some has already stated supressors are hard to come by in Ca. I opted for a 9.5" from rainierarms with a BRT covert comp which helps by pushing the blast forward. Oh..and reloading is a plus!!

Yeah no problem. Glad I could help.
it's all pistol powder with this cartridge, so they burn fast enough to get their party started early.
my plan is to either run a 7.5" with a masdefense 7.2" handguard and a surefire procomp brake.
or get a kak slim flash can (like a noveske flaming pig)
                              Under a 9 or possible 10" handguard.
There's also the idea of using an 8" barrel, the flash can, and a magpul moe sl handguard nudged inbetween....which, somehow, looks basic...yet so badass.
