    Just got my Russian Vepr

So yesterday evening I picked up my Russian Vepr 7.62X39 rifle. I get home ,unpackaged it. And Damn! I had a helluva time moving the safety to fire position!! I thought it was stuck! I finally got it to move but it sure is stiff moving between fire and safe. Anyone else experience this?
So this is my first AK variant rifle. I also own an AR which I just got also and shot once. This place got me hooked on guns and I'm a total newbie! So I don't know much about either one. But I want to know if I were to want my Vepr rifle to get polymer. Do I have to have a Gun smith do it? Is it a difficult process? I like the polymer look of the Krebs KV13. Can I just order the parts and put them on? Thanks again everyone!

You can remove the safety lever and bend it a little bit so it isn't digging in as hard into the receiver.

If necessary you can use an AK precision tool (big mallet) or field adjustment tool (a big rock) to adjust it to the correct shape.

You will need to "convert" your rifle to take standard AK parts.

The selector switch for my milled AK build was a little difficult at first too. Took a file to the little nob that protrudes into the receiver notches until it's easier to move, but still engaged and stays where it's supposed to be. Congrats!

That's what we call "stout Russian construction". Man up and put you back into moving that safety. Or better yet. Don't use it at all. That's the RUSSIAN way.

Congrats bro. If you want to put an aftermarket stock on it, it will have to be Vepr specific or you will need to modify it, can't take regular AK stock and put it on there. Also, if you are going to shoot a lot, you will probably want to install a bullet guide so it will accept regular AK magazines.

I'd say just spend some time flipping it up and down. My Zastava NPAP had the same problem.

Do not file anything. Do not remove the safety lever. Take off the top cover move safety into the safe position. If you push it up higher than safe position it will expose itself, grab the safety with your hand and bend it away from the receiver a little at a time until it fits your liking. Look up r22 compliance before you go any further with changing parts.

              Enjoy your rifle.

Man, wait til you try and do an AKM pattern conversion on that thing. Mine did NOT like being disassembled and having new non-Molot parts thrown at it.

I guess I was comparing the safety to my new Daniel defense AR safety. Anyways. So basically it sounds like I'm gonna need a gunsmith to convert the Vepr. So does anyone know of a good gunsmith in the South Bay Area?

You can't compare an AK safety to an AR safety.

Just bend the safety lever back a hair. It'll feel a whole lot better.

                              this.

Yes, the safety is stout. bend it little by little and it should become much looser. Gratz on the purchase. Vepr makes quality
