Colt SP1 20 round mags into Hunter Style

I have some older 20 round colt mags that have metal band inside to make them into what we used to call hunting mags. That takes a little work to get band inside or out of mag to make them 20 rounder or 5 round. now Question is if I used these in off list lower what would law inforcement consider them. If i had them in 5 Round band inside mode. 20 Round or 5 round mag?

    If it's not a permanent mod, from what I understand it's considered a 20.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

So basically...it's reversible right? You can change them into 5 and 20 rounds?

I thought if only 5 can be loaded, the its a 5 round mag.

Well, you can technically change all 5-10/20 round mags back to original 20 round mags with a little work if thats the case.

mine has an aluminum rivet so it must be destroyed to remove

untill then its not easily convertable without the use of a drill

to me if the rivet wasn't removed prior to 2000 taking it out and removing the little u bar would be manufacturing a large capacity magazine

because prior to the rivet removal it could not feed a large number cartridges and thusly was not a large capacity feed device

but i am not an attourny

Yeah Colt thought they were being clever in when they started shipping these reversibly neutered 20 rounders with the Sporter series of rifles, post '89 but before '94. For the same reason they shipped the Sporters with the bayo lug ground off. I suppose they thought that made them more "sporting" type rifles. Whatever.

I have a safe load of these 20; they were pretty easy to fix - just drill out the pop rivet in the baseplate, disassemble the mag and remove the U block. Re-assemble and viola, 20 rounds. I always thought that Colt did with s sort of wink wink nudge nudge motive.

But as to the question.... mmmm I'll leave that one to greater minds than myself. My take would be that they're 20 rounders that have been temporarily modified to only hold 5. Like how Mossberg ships their shotguns with the wooden dowel to plug the magazine tube.

I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.

You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
