    Fella, go shoot a flintlock

    And I don't mean an in-line.

After 5 range trips, ~100 balls, 3 type of flints, 3 different-thickness patches, 2 different powder types and loads, about 5 swabbing/cleaning procedures, I finally got a 3-shot/2" group at 50yrd. I can think of so many reasons to shoot a flintlock,

    1. This country's 'forefather/2A founder' actually shot this type of gun. Not an OLL, not a Garand, not a bolt-gun, not a lever-gun (all mine are sitting at home, nice & safe & ignored).

    2. To get it to shoot correctly took me some work, and it made me appreciate how fellas back then actually went to war and put meat on the table w/ this type of gun, how firearm works at a more fundamental level, and how lucky and for-granted we can be w/ modern arms.

    3. It's inexpensive to own and shoot: kingsnake just blew thru about $100 of ammo. Me, 20-30rds can last me 3 hrs. That's about $10 worth of powder and ball.

    4. At the range, you'll be the only one shooting a ML while every-other-one is shooting an OLL. Always a good conversation piece.

    5. A spectacular 6" fireball going off next to your face, a 1-foot flame shooting from the muzzle, and ensuing stinking white cloud. Another good conversation piece.

    6. Cash and carry. No Dros & 10days.

    7. Ain't have to worry about POTUS-elected No-on-2A-bama

I'd love to buy a flinklock kit.. but as a Lefty they can be hazardous as flint and/or flashpan would be in my face... so for me... to shoot a BP gun I have to stick with a in-line......

A friend of mine let me shoot his well over 15 years ago up at Chabot and it was a fricken kick. All the smoke in my face I never saw what happened. The kick was non existent. Way too much work for me to shoot one.

Chabot (go to its website, it has PB only events), but I'd imagine any outdoor range will do.

                      yeah.. how'd I miss that.

As a lefty, I've always been concerned about RH locks on frontstuffers and IMHO it is a valid concern. BUT, think of all the RH shooters who shoot SxS flintlock fowlers. I still don't like shooting a RH lock but, as long as I'm wearing glasses and feel comfortable with the weapon, I will do it. Yes, they do make LH locks. My first BP rifle has a LH cap lock and I feel far more comfortable shooting it than shooting some of my RH locked rifles. BTW, I'm looking for a .32ish cal LH flintlock if anyone has an extra one laying around.

Musket ball? Muskets are generally smooth bore muzzle loading rifles.

I would guess these guys are talking about rifled muzzle loaders.

Although I agree with your statement, many rifled guns used in The War of Northern Agression are commonly refered to as "muskets" or "rifled muskets". Also, a "musket ball" could mean a patched round ball or a conical round such as a "minnie ball".
