    BUIS

So I'm looking to purchase some back up irons for my AR build, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. One thing I've noticed is that there are 7,284 choices to pick from, so I'm having a hard time researching them all.

I'm looking for a flip up rear sight and a flip up front sight/gas block. If anyone can recommend anything that's high in quality and fairly inexpensive, I'd really appreciate it.

To ballpark, I'm looking to spend $150 max on the front and rear sights. I don't care if they're used, so if anyone is selling any, hit me up with a PM.

    Thanks.

For $150 combined, YHM's flip sights are probably your only choice. I have some and I like them, but the rear sticks out a little more than a more expensive BUIS (and is theoretically a little more likely to snag on gear, in the bag, etc.)

In that price range, YHM is pretty much your only choice unless you're willing to wait about 6 month for the Magpul BUIS to come out.

I've got a pair of rail mounted YHM flip sights I'll sell you. The front is not a gas block style but mounts to a railed handguard. $120 for the pair if you are interested. They are like new.

What about Midwest Industries? I know that a front and rear sight would fall within my price range. So how does MI and YHM compare?

I would go with Matech rear and YHM front.

The good thing about the Matech is it will allow you to dial up the preset elevation up to 600 yards, while most of the others are fixed to a single zero.

MI is good, but it will run you $200 for the pair.

What kind of rifle are you putting it on and what kind of optic are you running with it (or are they primary and not really BUIS)?

I have a few questions about the Matech.

Is there any way to adjust the distance markings for different cartridge ballistics and/or sight radii?

How tall is the Matech when folded? I'm interested in the height from the top of the rail to the parts along the centerline of the sight. What would hit a scope tube first, and how high would the scope have to be mounted to fit over the matech?

                        The Matech is 0.75" folded.

They're BUIS, people. If you want sights designed for precision shooting, buy a NM carry handle. NO, they can't be adjusted for different ballistics.

The sight peep that folds itself would hit the scope tube since the tube is largest in OD at the center and that's what's in the center of a Matech.

How high the scope needs to be depends on the diameter of the scope eyepiece.

A Matech fits under an ACOG.

                          Matech is pretty low.

Fair enough on the "adjustable ballistics" feature request. Why not ask? You never know what some smart cookie could have done.

To provide some detail: I'm trying to set up a 6.5 Grendel and a .300 Whisper. I've already got one MI low-profile BUIS and at .430" high, it's very snuggly between the rail and the scope zoom ring (of either upper). I was hoping that if a scope got fogged I could pull the scope off and have a range-adjustable BUIS that would fit in the same narrow location. But with the Grendel and the Whisper having ballistics at opposite ends of the spectrum, if I can't customize the ranges, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

It looks like the Knight's Armament 300 yard peep may be the only flip rear that's lower than the low-profile MI, and I prefer the MI since it doesn't have a small peep insert to keep track of.

Thank you for very precise and complete answers to my questions. Quite helpful.
