I wasn't sure where to post this. Does anybody own, or know anybody who owns a Sheperd's Scope? I always see their add in shotgun news and think their system is pretty interesting. I own a .308 winchester model 70 varmint rifle. It is a heavy rifle with a free floating bull barrel. I don't use it for hunting, just for range shooting. I was wondering how well this scope would work for my purposes.

Sheperd scopes aren't bad but nothing to write home about. For the price I'd rather get a Leupold. If I wanted an alternative ranging system, I'd go with a Horus scope.NRA Benefactor Life Member

Never tried one of their scopes but believe it or not I went to high school with the daughter who appears in the ad. There's a son too but he wasn't pretty enough to get in an ad I guess.Freaked me out the first time I saw that ad later in life after getting into guns, then I went to the SHOT show and sure enough she was there and doing well. Small world.

(Flamesuit ON) I think for the money....for the money...the Busnell Ellite series are the best bang for the (cheap) buck............ but there ain't NOTHING wrong with Leupold....still the best standard to judge most every other brand against.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

I have a World Class Tasco from about 10 yrs ago that was made in Japan that is a great scope. I also have a $100 Tasco POS from 3 yrs ago that the NEW Tasco won't repair. I think when a line is debuted they CAN be great, but quality control usually drops off and you get a lowest common denominator product. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14 AO that I haven't been able to kill on my Mini 14 heavy barreled semi auto, for the money it seems like a good deal, I would buy another. For my best .308 bolt gun, I took the plunge and bought a Nightforce NXS 5.5x22x50, a lot of money, the rifle isn't finished yet, so I don't know how it compares, we'll see.Comment

The Super Sniper was designed but not made by Tasco, SFWA is the only one selling them and the 30mm tube has enough adjusment to bring it out to 700 plus yards but isnt as bright and clear as the Elite 1" tubes that Bushnell uses. Ive had access to both of these scopes and both are good but are ment for totally different jobs IMHO.
The SS is good to go on a .50BMG and has a very good warranty(lifetime).
The bushnell glass is very bright and very clear and easy on the pocket book and comes in alot of styles, maganafication, etc.
Get both!sigpic

Shepard coats glass? They were the first US company to coat lenses? I have to call a BIG bs on that one. They don't coat glass, nor do they grind lenses. They most likely get their coated lenses from the same company Leupold does... Sagamihara glassworks, owned by Nikon.
Have you looked through a Shepherd? You would probably feel different. I was in Reno at the NRA national convention when Mr. Shepherd told me of his quest to compete with the europeans and their optics. He is the person that told me of their lenses and coatings. What reason does he have to lie? I already had bought his scope and was trelling him of my hunting experience with his product. He was sharing his pride in an American made product that is every bit as good as his competition. It sounds like you have great knowlege in optics, good for you. I have only practical knowlege.
Sorry I called it glass, please forgive me for stepping on sacred ground.

In 1980, Burris became the first American manufacturer to offer scopes with multi-coated lenses.
According to the Shepherd website, their first scope didn't come out until 1983, and they use Japanese lenses.
Sorry, the numbers don't add up. If he was the first person to use coated lenses in scopes in 1983, and Burris started using multi-coated lenses in 1980, there's a bit of a problem there, don't you think?
