    need AK tools! please help!

This winter break (yes I'm young) I'm coming home to San Diego from school and was hoping to do a couple AK builds with my dad. They will be our first and probably our only builds ever.

Not only can I not afford the tools to do the build (spent all my money on the kits), but I don't think its worth it for a one-time thing.

Anyone in the SD area willing to help a guy out? I'm willing to rent them even. I was going to hopefully find an equipment rental place to get a 12-ton press and was hoping to borrow/rent the jigs from someone (long rivet, short rivet, trigger guard).

Help make my dream a reality! Thanks

or you guys can let me try my luck with dremel made bucking plates and a hammer... but would you be able to sleep at night knowing you let such a horrifying AK come into existence? i didn't think so

or we can do a SD build party and the money i would put towards renting tools can go towards hamburgers, hotdogs, and other various forms of deliciousness

using a dremel to demill sucks. i used a electric hand grinder, hammer and a drill. easiest way to build is using U-DRIVE SCREWS #8, insted of rivits.

may be the easiest but defiantly not the best. I will only do rivets. why not do it right the first time

There's never enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to do it over...

i've got bending jig and spotter. no riveting gear, i'm from the dark side, i use screws. we have some rivet builders here, maybe one of them can help you out. if you're handy with metal you can make bucking bars w/a 5/16" ball mill. you'll need the bolt cutter tool for the f.trunnion. you can make out of 24" hf bolt cutter or buy on the akfiles for around $40. a word of advice, DO NOT use any type of press jig for the center support. no one feels your pain when you crush your new 100% reciever.

As far as the front trunnion rivets go, I've been using a socket, can't remember what size, but just shoved it in the trunnion, ground a flat spot on the rivets for a better fit and used a ground out punch on the outside to pound the rivets from the outside. Works like a champ and is easy. I have used a poor mans jig for bending but u have to be careful so the flat doesn't buckle and twist. My buddy always uses a dremel to put a thin cut along the fold lines and then puts a light weld along the crease. Seems to work really well. No jig needed. Just a couple suggestions anyways

i have yet to order my NDS-5's but I am under the impression that it comes with a center support, is that correct? if I have to install one i will be sure to do so carefully (probably crush the rivet with a rod and hammer)

i have a few bits and pieces for an ak build (bits, trunion finders, etc), but do not have the major tools like jigs and such. if you want, i can send you what i have for a reasonable offer.

PM me so i can check what i got at home.
