    SKS question

    Hi All,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and hopefully you can help me.

I just got a Chinese SKS and would like to change out the original wood stock for a more modern tactical stock. I was looking at a few of them online and seem to like the ATI folding stock best.

Does anyone have any suggestion on which stock is best? I am looking to stay under $200 for the total conversion.

A friend of mine has a bullpup conversion stock that looked pretty cool.

It would probably be cheaper to have boughten an ak. Those tactical stocks will no way be stronger or better than the wood one. With that being said if you do change it, don't throw the wood away!

The "draganov" stocks look cool but are really long.

It's not very tactical, but in my experience the Butler Creek stocks cannot be beat. I have about five of them:

I just noticed they now seem to be available in colors, which is nice (the photo above is during a Duracoat process).

Most of the "tactical" stocks for SKS from ATI and Tapco seemed like cheap crap to me. I have never been disappointed with my Butler Creeks.

A have a few with tapcos and love them and they look good. As far as performance no issues what so ever and hold up very strong.

Most Chinese SKS's has a rivet that locks in the retainer piece to the handguard/gastube making the handguard/gastube one piece. That rivet is a PITA to remove. I gave up trying to remove rivet, I did not want to risk damaging handguard/gastube.

IIRC if you change your Chinese wood stock to a more modern tactical folding stock you have to be 922r compliant

"modern and tactical"...two words that should never be used with a sks. You may have bought the wrong rifle...ak and or a saiga is what you are looking for.

Battle Proven-Sturdy and reliable...and great looking..that is something an sks is when in its original form.

If your wood looks like crap either clean it- re-finish it or buy new wood

just as stated above you're going to have to become 922r compliant
(a federal law meaning you're going to have to buy a whole bunch of us made parts because you're taking your gun out of original configuration.) if you decide to change out of your wooden stock...or so I've been told and I believe it to be true.

(so if its just some small issue like length of pull you can get a add on stock adapter spacer that will increase the length of your stock and that will not trigger the 922 r compliance laws.)

I know its a stupid law but it is still a law.

ohh and if your wood stock does not have cracks I would buy it from you: )

Only aftermarket stock that looks decent is the timbersmith.
