I used the search function but I didn't find anything so I figured I'd ask opinions.
I don't much like standard A2 grips, so I have a box of them in the shed which have been replaced with grips I like better. I also don't much like Kydex grip wraps. I've made a few, but making them is a bit of a pain and they always seem like they can be turned (even though I use double sided tape between the grip and the wrap, and mount my Chicago Screws close to the grip).
So having a little time this afternoon I tried out modifying an OEM A2 grip with a straight piece of Kydex. I milled out a slot on the back side of the grip with a ball end bit on a Dremel, cut a straight piece of Kydex to fit and epoxied it into place. Then I reinforced the interface between the grip and the "sharkfin" with epoxied cloth (I just cut some strips from a rag - I was too lazy to go out to the shed again and get some glass cloth).
This is a true 30 minute prototype so I was not worried about cosmetics, but only for proof of concept.
It seems to work fine for its intended purpose, was easier to make as compared to a Kydex wrap, and could be very quickly switched between various guns.
My question is whether this would be seen to be as legal as a full Kydex grip wrap? I don't want to get into a discussion about whether grip wraps are really legal on a featureless build. So for those of you who accept that grip wraps are, do you feel that this permanently attached sharkfin would be equally "legal" to a grip wrap of equivalent dimensions? I feel that it would be, but I don't know whether I am overlooking something nuanced or obvious.
Thanks.
