    Plugging a gas port.

I am building a dedicated .22 upper using a Ciener conversion. Since it uses a blowback system I can close the gas port on the barrel correct?

I'm thinking about using the lightest barrel 16" I can get, somehow close the gas port, and use a lightweight rifle length FF tube.

I'd like to forgo the use of a gas block/front sight. Is is possible to carefully JB weld the port closed, silver solder it closed, or just tig it closed?

    Any suggestions are welcomed.

A Ciener conversion is NOT a dedicated .22. You still retain the 5.56mm chamber and too fast rifling. Now, you may never convert it back to centerfire, but the ability remains.Get a Spikes dedicated, and have no worries.

I'd love a Spike's but unless you are paying for the difference this is the way I'm going.

      Lar blem upper. $50
      Cienner kit $150
      Barrel $135
      FF tube $35
      (inc Barrel nut)

For the $370 it's going to cost I'm willing to accept its limitations

Want an easy way to close the port? Buy a picatinny gas block (i.e. JP enterprises- held on w/ set screws), remove the gas tube, and mount it out of alignment (slightly forward or aft). your port is shut but not permanently.

I like the idea of a gas block turned around backwards to block the gas port. If you get a railed one you can put a front sight on it as well.

If your mind isn't completely made up consider this. It's not going to be very accurate since the bore and rifling are not designed for the .22lr round. Spikes dedicated upper starts at $550 - only $170 more than your current plan, which doesn't include the cost of a gas block and a front sight either, so the difference is probably more like $70. 70 bucks for a much more accurate rifle seems like a good investment to me.
