Confused as to what I can/can't do with my pre-ban AK Clone

I have a Norinco AK Clone that I registered before the ban. It has not been modified at all since I purchased it; it has a thumbhole stock and I have a few 30-round mags that I bought for it years ago. I recently got back into shooting and took it to the range and one of the guys at the range asked "Why don't you put a grip stock on it?" I didn't think I could, I thought I had to keep it as it was when I registered it.

I did some searching on the site and online and didn't find much on modifying pre-ban Assault Rifles that were registered with the DOJ. Can I purchase a grip stock for it? This brings up another question: Can I purchase additional 30-round magazines for it?

It's a Registered Assault Weapon, it can have any "evil feature" you desire.

You cannot buy more mags with capacity greater than 10 rounds though.

Yes it can be modified. No need to keep it in preban configuration.
Are you 100% sure that you registered it? Do you have a letter? AW registration was not done at time of purchase as many people mistakenly think. You had to send in a separate form at the time of the ban... Just checking..

No you can not purchase any more large-capacity magazines.

Btw you need to determine if you have a straight (normal) receiver or a slanted one. As it changes what stocks work for it.

          Don't make it full-auto.

          Don't cut it down to a Short-Barreled-Rifle.

Otherwise, it's already an 'assault weapon' - can't be more of one of those by adding features.

Get some nice Chicom wood furniture for it. Shoot the piss out of it...or not.

Thanks guys, I might look into modifying the thumbhole stock (maybe a carpenter can make it more "grip-like" while I save some funds for a new stock). Thanks for dropping the "Chicom" name, gwgn02.

@Chaos47 - yes, I did indeed register it and have my letter from the DOJ. I keep a copy of it in the case with the rifle along with a copy of the DROS. Thanks for the link on the slanted receiver or straight (I'm not sure but will check that out too).

Thanks again for your replies & suggestions; you guys have a great community here!

I doubt its worth modifying the thumb hole stock... IMO they come out kinda fugly...

If its a slant cut receiver you are probably going to have to go with Ironwood as I don't think there is many more options out there.

Sorry didn't mean to be prying about the registration but you would be surprised on how many people come on here and think they have RAW's because the owned it a long time ago but they never really registered it. Just wanted to give you the best advice and keep you legal.

I like the federal ban weapons for some reason though. If it were mine i would keep it the way it is .

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

Sounds like a 922r issue. If it was imported after the import ban, which it sounds like it was, it has to remain in the configuration it was imported, unless you put a minimum number of American-made parts on it.

save your original furniture and trick it out. Add a magpul grip and rail for front if you want to train with it and shoot the heck out of it. Or you can even go with a wood norinco set like the Type 56. You have lots of options.
check out ironwood designs if you can't find a wood set to your liking.

I also have a RAW MAK90, if you change things on it like I did just make sure your 922 compliant, have at least 5 usa made parts for a non threaded barrel norinco or 6 usa parts for a threaded one. For example I threaded my barrel and added a usa Ak74 style brake, that's 1 part. Then I dropped in a Tapco G2 trigger group, that's 3 usa parts. Finally since I fitted a Bulgarian Ak74 stock set I got my remaining 2 usa parts by replacing the follower and floor plates on my bakelight magazines. As far as magazines go any standard capacity magazines you owned with the rifle prior to the 2000 ban are free for you to use, anything you purchase now would have to be 10 round magazines.

There is no minimum number of US made parts required. There is a maximum of imported parts.
