Realistically how much for the cheapest reliable AR build?

I'm used to firing AK rounds but have recently been introduced to the 5.56. I'm only going to shoot it once in a blue moon so I don't want to invest much into it; it just needs to be reliable and functional; I don't care if it isn't the most tactical and bad-*** looking rifle.

If I were to take my time in buying components, maybe wait for sales, blemished, or used. What is the realistic price I can build a system?

Get yourself an Anderson lower that I've seen for 49.00 a buis in the exchange and you can do it for under 600. That's pretty cheap.

<4 years till retirement, can't wait to leave this state
California, where all of the good stuff is banned, registered, regulated or prohibited, yay.....

Law abiding firearm owners have no chance in this state.

Probably $550-$750 for a complete rifle. I believe the S&W M&P Sport recently was on sale around $600.

If you piece together your own, you can build an okay one for that range.

You can assemble an AR for around $450-600 on the cheap. You should look at used parts too. Don't just dismiss them, there are some good deals out there.

I used a lot of advice I read around here and did pretty good myself. So I thought I'd share what I learned. I went Anderson and PSA for new stuff and found some deals on used upper parts.

          Good luck on your build.

Assemblied upper $189 - it can go for $169 on sale

BCG and charging handle $120 (they occasionally have PTAC on sale for ~$80)

Lower build kit $90 (can go around $60-$70 on sale)

            Rear sight $50

Lower - it's cheaper to find locally. Should be about $50+DROS on sale

            Total: $450-$500 + shipping + DROS

P.S. Just noticed the dust cover is missing. Not critical, but if you want one, it's about $5 on ebay.

Ruger's new AR556 makes building your own reliable low-cost rifle pretty difficult. My LGS just got the AR556s in for $599. Had I not recently purchased a Sig 516, I'd be jumping on one of those.

If I didn't have any ARs I'd get this.

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

You need to define reliable. Some people call their guns reliable after a 100 round range trip.

But if that's all they know is their first 100 round trip, does that make them wrong. I mean if it was reliable for those shots then that makes it reliable.
