I know this video compares M1A to AR15 as opposed to AR10, but design principle is pretty much the same. The results are not what I expected.

Why do so many people whine about AR style 308's?

It gets frustrating when trying to figure out what parts to buy when building one from scratch. I wouldn't call their posts whining, as much as trying to decipher a complicated puzzle...hopefully before they dump a lot of money into a part that won't work with the rest of their build.
Lack of available of parts is where the whining starts. You fall in love with KAC, only to discover that finding a CA legal version of their lower is next to impossible...and even if you can it costs more than your car...so you start looking for alternatives...before you know it you are way down the rabbit hole.
It would be WONDERFUL if the AR10 style rifle were half as standardized as the AR15. It would make trying to build them from scratch a much less complicated prospect (as far as knowing what will fit before parting with your money). Sadly, it just isn't so. Therefore if you want something specific, you have to plan it out from start to finish before you spend your money...lest you discover that fancy do-dad you had your heart set on doesn't come in the DPMS Variant or Armalite Variant or only works with a specific LaRue upper that doesn't work with the style lower you went with, and so on.
In short, an AR10 type build takes considerably more planning from start to finish if you're picky.Last edited by tacticalcity; 02-25-2015, 6:19 PM.Comment
