All I see in Cal Guns private ammo posts is this XM855 (SS109) Lake City 62gr green tip,,is the green tip safe for All AR's with the Chrome Line Chambers & Barrels? MY EDIT--> The rifle I bought was a DelTon DT Sport 1in9 twist 5.56 nato,I bought this for my wife ,I thought she could handle the 5.56 a little better than our 308...Then I notice a lot of this M855 for sale,Almost every post for 5.56,wasn't sure why?

It's good to go in any barrel.

The green tip is obviously just paint scheme used by the military to I.D. that type of round. For instance red tips are tracers, which ARE NOT good for your barrel with sustained fire.
So let's recap here.
SS109 M855 = Green tip
556 tracers=red
556 M995 AP=Black ( rare elusive animal)

The reason there is so much of it for sale is that the ATF is trying to ban it (for sale, not use) because it has a steel tip on top of the lead core and they are trying to classify it as armor piercing due that steel tip and the widespread use of AR pistols. It is the ammo 'scare' that we are just coming down on, but limited to 5.56, so people are buying it off the shelves and then selling it (or trying to) for three times the price. Otherwise it is just an ok performing cheap to buy 5.56 round, nothing inherently unsafe about it. Don't buy it for a jacked up price, there are better rounds for cheaper.Last edited by jcourson; 02-23-2015, 2:20 PM.Originally posted by Ant45Plenty of people who don't frequent internet forums are blissfully unaware that their guns suck.I don't understand. I'd double check your barrel twist rate. If your twist is faster than 7 or slower than 9, you won't get the most out of a 62 grain round. Google "ar barrel twist rate. "
Granted it's a minor concern, as I think 1/8-ish barrels are the norm now. My AR is 1/9 and prefers the 55 grain m193 round.Last edited by Cylarz; 02-23-2015, 1:06 PM.Comment

There are barrel twists faster than 1:7 or slower than 1:9 for 5.56? (would still be safe, just not as accurate)Originally posted by Ant45Plenty of people who don't frequent internet forums are blissfully unaware that their guns suck.I don't understand.
