    Remington 700 build

I've been wanting to get a 100-400 yard rifle that I can grow into longer distances as my skill set progresses, and wanted to ask your guys feedback as to the setup I'm thinking of:

Remington 700 due to it being a good gun with tons of aftermarket parts, and gunsmith knowledge.

.308 clambering due to ammo being cheaper for practice, energy still being enough to hunt with, and it is still able to reach out to the 700-1000 yard distances. I'm

    Timney trigger

    McMillan stock, A2 or A5

Leupold VX-3. Thinking about 4.5-14x or the 3-10x

What do you guys think? I don't want to cheap out and just have to buy again, and everything I listed seems like quality stuff for what I'm looking for.

Sounds good. I would go with a Vortex PST in 6-24 myself though. Plan on shooting the 175's if you want to reach out to 1k.

Sounds like a great start to me, with a few exceptions.

However, I would start with a different scope, unless you were planning on upgrading later. The BDC reticules, IMHO, can only carry you so far, until you start toying with long distance shots, then a mil marked reticule with mil knobs (or MOA/MOA) will carry you out there.

Don't forget about the bases, you can start off with 0 deg one, and work your way up to the 20 deg for those long shots.

I luvguns recommended the vortex viper pst mil/mil 6-24- Which is a good scope- I have one. However, 6x is a bit high magnification for hunting. For a target/competition scope it's GTG.

You should get a 20MOA scope base to begin with- why buy 2 bases?

It's true, what if the OP doesn't get the bug, and sticks to hunting around that 100 to 400? Bases are not super expensive, and I just threw out there as an option.

Is it a hunting gun or a target gun.
            Decide that FIRST.
Then, build the best gun that you can for that job.

Hunting with a target gun sucks.
Target shooting with a hunting gun sucks.
A hunting gun has a much lower magnification scope.
A target rifle is heavy as hell so you can shoot it all day long.
Trying to compromise to do both just means it will suck for both.

Of course AR15 barrels is right..... but some people do lug HEAVY rifles for hunting.

As to the 20moa base... unless something is really out whack, or your scope is THAT crappy, you can still get a solid 100yd zero no problem. That same 20MOA base will get you out to long range as well assuming you have an appropriate scope for it.

I have a O moa base on my comp rifle... from a 100yd zero, I max out elevation at 17 mils. That 17 mils will get me to almost 1,487 yds with my rifle and my load. I go transonic (depending on density altitude at 1525 so even with a flat base, it doesnt hold me back... Depending on altitude, temperature and such... My bullet goes a whopping 32 more yards than I can dial before going transonic tumble....

Many scopes dont have as much elevation as mine, and would require an angled base. May as well buy one from the start...

Definitely a target gun first and foremost. I just don't get the opportunity to hunt that often (I live in SoCal). I'm just hoping that it can be capable of taking deer size game, on the rare opportunity that I get a chance to go.

Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but because I'm replacing the stock and trigger, can I buy a cheap rem700 model [1]? It seems like the more expensive ones just give you better features, but the action/bolt/barrel stay the same

The cheaper SPS models have a crappy finish that by most accounts will rust if you look at it funny. I would go with a 700P or something else that has the parkerized finish (unless you're planning on refinishing it anyways). I got the 700 LTR with a 20" barrel and HS Precision stock to keep it light enough to carry hunting, and I've been very happy with it so far.

Get a SPS Tactical/SPS Varmint/Police (all have the same barrel profile). If you're looking for 1000 yards, I'd suggest the 26" barrel models.
The police has a better stock, but also costs more to reflect it. I would (and did) buy an SPS Varmint and add on the upgraded stock that you prefer. 20moa base, a good scope (I'm using an SWFA fixed 10X for now), good bipod, and you'll probably need a good trigger at some point.
Practice, learn, and change whatever you feel needs to be changed to meet your goals.

If you are swapping stock and trigger, the cheapest source of barrellled action appropriate for target shooting will be the 26" barrelled SPS varmint model.
The rifle you linked has a lightweight sporter barrel which is more appropriate for hunting.

Well then Burris Zee Rings...with a +10moa insert and a -10 insert you have 20moa. Easy enough to change out to 0 inserts for hunting.

Wont need to change an angled base unless you have a tiny scope with very little adjustment.

People use angled base and get 100yd zero no problem.
