I have an older Tasco 3-9x40. I used that because I had it, a fixed 4x is okay. For 100 yards or so, you don't really need a lot. Truth told, I have not even used the scope to shoot my last few deer. They've been with irons at under 50 yards. My scope is usually used to look around the area.

Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

      From personal experience:

I have a Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 on top of a Dnz one piece.

Great glass and sitting solid as a rock.(pictures by request) Really made the whole rig heavy and a lil unbalanced. 40mm obj. is a lil much imho for the dirty thirty.

I really like variable power scopes so if I were to do it again I would opt for a 2-7x32 or just scrub the optics and get a peeper(Williams are nice).

At the ranges a 30-30 is effective scope is not needed unless one has an eyesight problem.

Cabelas Leverolution scope is "tuned" to go with Hornady's Leverolution ammo. This combo can effectively increase the range of the lever action Marlin. I have this combo, and will be practicing at the range to see how this works.

I use a Nikon 2-7 x 30. A little smaller in length than a typical 3-9 which seems to me a bit much for the 336.

That one is interesting too. I posted two scopes I have thought about.

I am looking at pulling 3-9x40 from Savage 99, for a more compact scope.

                      A 3-9 is way too much magnification for a short-range gun like a 30-30.
Get something that goes down to 1x if you want to go after hogs because a hog will suprise you in the brush at 15yds and a 3x9 scope will be way to slow to get on target with...

                      Here is my pig gun:

Why not a good quality 4X scope.

                          I can't put a scope on a lever gun. It's like, a sin!
