I am somewhat confused on the difference between rifles made in New Haven Connecticut and current ones from NY.

Marlin is now located in NC, not NY. It's owned by Remington, which is part of the Freedom Group http://www.freedom-group.com/NRA Life Member - CRPA Life Member - NRA Certified RSO - USN Veteran
I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Marlin centerfire rifles are made at the Remington facilities in Illion, N.Y.. The rimfires are made in Kentucky.
I have not shot a new Marlin, but I have heard that QC was bad, and it's slowly getting better. The change from North Haven to Illion was around 2009-2010, so those are likely the worst.
I handled a brand new 1894 44 Magnum a few days ago. It felt smooth for a brand new gun, the fit on the wood was a little off, the metal looked okay. If I wanted one, I'd buy it.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Marlin
Like rromeo said. They are Remington now.At least that who is answering the phone for them.
Check this out:Marlin 336 Youth model 30-30.Bought it awhile back. Finally got some ammo for it a few weeks ago(I have never been a 30-30 fan).
I figured a nice scope would be the ticket.Ordered a mount and rings.
First off these China knock off full rail mounts are undersize for any ring.Sent both pairs back.
Don't do it I am telling you.
Now the plot thickens:I pull the rifle out of the safe.I am looking down the barrel and something looks funny from receiver to front sight.
NOT.HAH HAH.Did not see this when I bought it.Dumb right?
I pull the plug screws out and install the Weaver brands scope mount screws.
I put a straight edge on the screws to extend out to the front sight.
The front sight is minimum 3/8" left of centerline of the receiver screws.WTH.
I called Remington/Marlin.
They are offering to take care of it.
They sent a shipping label to cover return shipping.
Hope this works out.
I was at a loss for words. The barrel assembly was actually manufactured and screwed into a sub standard/drilled crooked receiver.Yea my mouth still falls open over that one.Last edited by Coyotegunner; 01-15-2015, 6:02 PM.Comment

If you're running lever guns you need to join this site

Marlin levers built by the original Marlin Company sell at a premium. the barrels are marked left, rear side with a JM.
The bluing on these are clean and shiny. The action is sweet. The wood is Walnut (oiled) and quite nice.
When Remington took over 2011 ish many of the old employees were let go or retired..
. Quality suffered and if you read that link above its a big deal...
I have many original factory Marlins. But I did recently buy a youth model 336 that was built by Remington. Several months ago. $406 delivered.
The wood is ok, but not walnut. Fit was ok. The bluing doesn't exist; its a mat finish that is black, not smooth, almost like a finish for the back of a pick up truck, but not lumpy....haha
You can see the bottom rifle is the new Remington. Notice the wood isn't walnut..

This new model was to be a cheap trunk gun and I did install some Champion Stocks (plastic) and removed the wood. I had to run the lever about 1000 times to get it smooth, then I removed the bolt and cleaned it well and re oiled it. It's good. Real good, but not as good as the original Marlin.
She's,on the bottom. 30-30. Top is a real nice Cowboy limited in .44 magnum
That I found recently on a gun rack in a gun store for $1300. I got it for $1000.
(Consignment) appears un fired and the reason I bought some .44 mag reloading components.

I love Lever Guns...!
Be well
Bob.

Remington aquired Marlin in January 2008. A number of early "remlins" have JM stamped barrels as a number of old stock was sent to the new location and used. Quality began to suffer in 07 as the Marlin employees that would soon be unemployed let the quality drop. Around 2011 the rifles began to get better and today they are not bad. While I own several Marlin's, I did purchase a Remlin at the end of 2013 that was not too bad.Comment

The average cost for that rifle will be around 1k. You might find one at a local shop or a private seller but those deals are hard to find. To get an idea, go on gunbroker or other similar sites and look them up. Even the ones listed at 600 for a starting bid usually hit 1k or more at time of sale. The .357/.38 is one of the more expensive Marlins.Comment

I bought a NIB JM Marlin 1895 rifle last year for $750.
I just recently bought a NIB REP Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag. and it appears that the quality has improved but I haven't tried to shoot it yet"The right to buy weapons is the right to be free"
