    6.5 Creedmoor conversion

    Gentlemen/Ladies,

I have been throwing around the idea of building up a bolt action chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I am not positive if I want to put from scratch or convert my Remington 700 .243 into the gun that I want... This will be my first build so I'm looking for any information from people here who have maybe done the same. I have done my homework on barrels, stocks, triggers, etc... just want to know which may be the easier/more cost efficient way of going about this.

Thanks in advance for any input.

If your 700 is in factory configuration, then it's probably not much different either way. I'd say it depends on how much utility you get from the .243. If you don't plan on using it, then use that. If you you convert the .243, you may as well burn out the barrel while you wait for parts.

Keep it 243, put a fast twist 1-7.5" barrel on it and shoot 115DTAC's. It will easily out perform the Creedmoor at 1K.

If you don't use your 700 as a 243 very much, it's an easy decision to rebarrel it.
If you like and use your 243 a lot, then build another rifle...

The .243 was my first hunting rifle and I haven't really used it in the past 10 years. I'm looking for a flat shooter that won't burn out a barrel AS fast, but still reach out to 1k... From what I have read, the 6mm creedmoor seems to outperform the 6.5, so I may even look into that as well...

Any input on a twist rate for the 6mm creedmoor? I have read that a 1-8" twist rate is pretty solid, but haven't found much else...

Most cost effecient would be to shoot it as a .243. It is an extremely underrated round, dig up some of AR15Barrels posts on it. If your deadset on a barrel swap you just as well should true up the action. It'll be less money than a custom action.

6 creed aint much different from 243- same barrel twist- same bullets. Slightly better barrel life.

AR15 barrels has recently acquired 6 creed chamber cutter.

.243 Win, easier to obtain good brass and dies.

Why don't you burn the barrel out of the 243 and then change it out, if you still want you. Changing out a good barrel before it's burned out is kind of strange logic if the reason that you want to change the barrel is to get a barrel that doesn't burn out as fast.

This is exactly what you should do.

If you are worried about barrel life and want performance to 1k, 6.5CD a really good choice. Unless you need BR accuracy, the 6.5 shorts tend to be really well balanced. They are one of the easiest cartridges to handle for all distances 0-1km. It's partly because they aren't screaming fast, they are a nice 2,800-2,850 that do a good job bucking wind.

A flat trajectory is going to be based on travel time as bullets will tend to drop at 9.8m/s^2 at STP. For shorter distances, the really fast stuff can be more challenging. If you blink, you may not see your shot.

Sounds like its set up as an old hunting rifle (pencil barrel) and he want a long range (heavy barrel setup) to me atleast... I say swap it out, I've been looking for a similar donor rifle to do just this. Just can't seem to find a cheap one... Like he said its been sitting for years, make it into something you'll want to use or get rid of it... Sell it to me

If your .243 has the twist to shoot the 105's. It's hard to beat that ballisticly in a 6.5. I'd shoot the 6mm if I was you. But I don't know how your 700 is setup.

Exactly. Unless you just want something new and addng cool stuff there isn't much to gain with the effort and cost. As mentioned if the twist rate in your 243 allows shooting long VLD bullets I'd say shoot that barrel until the accuracy goes south.

I have a Win 70 in 22-250 with 1/14 twist and I've been wanting a 1/9 or 1/8 twist to shoot needles like .224 bullets. I can't rebarrel my Win 70 for it is still shooting great. All it needed was to replace that cheesy factory bedding compound they use.

I've had numerous people approach me about this lol. I'd rather build off of it to save some cash. It is a flat out hunting rifle, so I am looking to convert to a bull barrel. So many cartridges, not enough time (or money!).

And as for burning the barrel out, I'd rather save the cash on the ammo and put it towards a round I'm more interested in. Thanks for the input!
