    First bolt gun advise.

    Alright guys, I'm going to ask a rookie question of sorts. I have upwards of 50 handguns and about a dozen black guns and ak's for tacital work. I know the rules as far as those go, importing, barrel length Ect. What I don't have knowledge of is what I can bring into the state. I went long range shooting for the first time and have caught a huge bug for the sport. My buddy said I have a really good eye for it, 350 yards with iron sights and hitting small iron out to 600 within 5 shots.

    My question is this. How do I know what I can buy? Is there a roster like handguns? I will be buying the rifle online, I don't want to break the law obviously. All help would be greatly appreciated.

    As far as I know, 16" barrel minimum and 30" minimum overall length. no mag over 10 rounds.

      That's my understanding too. Also, no bolt gun roster.

      Take a look at the Desert Tech rifles. Amazing. AI AT is good too. Sako TRG's are nice. Surgeon scalpels are amazing. GAP rifles are amazing too.

      It's an expensive bug!

        Manually operated rifles..... generally 10 round mag or less is fine unless it's tube fed can go higher than 10....

        50BMG is still banned... ANYTHING besides 50bmg is legal. Including 510 DTC and all the variants of the BMG.... just 50bmg specifically is banned.

        Everything else is fine. No issues. no list- as long as you have min barrel length, min OAL.

          Awesome! I was thinking about an armalite ar-30 in 300 win. Any thoughts or info?

            If you want to shoot long distance I'd recommend 6.5 creedmoor. Cheaper to reload, very accurate and can shoot all day without getting banged up by a magnum. It does duplicate the trajectory of that .300 WM.

              For the price, the AR-30 is a pretty crude and heavy gun. I'd suggest exploring other avenues. Keep in mind, as a rule of thumb, the optic should cost about as much as the rifle.

                I get a pro deal on leupold so I will take advantage of that. Yeah I read about the armalite kind of being junk. I'd like to spend 1800-2500 on the rifle. Any suggestions? I do not reload at the moment, don't have the space. And I like to shoot a lot. If I go to the range I will shoot at least 200 rounds through this rifle. So I can't go 338 lapua, the ammo has to be affordable.

                  Do you reload? 200 rounds per trip, you'll be wanting to reload...

                    I don't mind spending 300 dollars on ammo for a trip to the range, I do t want to spend 6-800.

                      shoot long range, don't reload, that's easy....

                      6.5 creedmoor - $1.15 per round is the cheapest I see right now. So 200 rounds...$230 dollars. Use 140gr A-Max from Hornady. Good factory ammo and will get you out to 1K.

                      Savage has 6.5 creedmoor chambered rifles.

                      If you are so inclined, build a custom rifle for $2300'ish (no optics of course)
                      Trued Remington Action - $500
                      Jewell Trigger - $215
                      Barrel - $340
                      Brake - $50
                      Chambering from a smith w/ cerakote - $700
                      Stock - $500

                        I was kicking that idea around actually. I've got a lmt stage two lower ar laying around. You think it would be good if I got a. 6.5 upper? Or is the ar part gonna throw off the range and accuracy? I'll spend 1500 on the best upper and get a mark 8 scope.

                          My mistake, I was thinking Grendel. Not creedmoor.

                            Call SSK industries (http://sskindustries.com) and ask to talk to Brian. They can build you a rifle at a very reasonable price within your budget.

                            They have built both of my DG rifles (.500, .416), and building a .458 right now. And yes, they also build rifles in rat calibers as well. .

                              You could do this incrementally:
                              Step 1: Buy a Tikka Sporter in 6.5 (or 300 WM). Spend the same on the glass. Shoot often and improve your skills;
                              Step 2: Upgrade the stock (if you'd like). Shoot often and improve your skills;
                              Step 3: If you still enjoy mid/long range, replace the rig (or at least the Tikka) with a Sako (or a DT). Enjoy.
                              Done.
