    Ruger Gunsite Scout in 308?

    Hi CG!
Just curious what you opinions you guys have on this rifle? What would be the things I should look for when I buy this rifle?

I have watched a few videos online about it but I would also like to know what opinions you guys have. How much is a fair used value for this rifle?
I dont plan to hunt or do anything with it, so this might just be a range rifle.

This would be my first modern bolt action rifle.

    Thanksss

It is an amazing rifle. Maybe the best bolt action ever produced.

I prefer Savages Scout rifle and it's a little cheaper. Of course you give up the big magazines. Personally, don't know who needs a 20 round mag in a bolt gun.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

I thought they were set up for M-14 mags. Havent looked into it too much. Now I will have to check.

EDIT: For clarification, Per Guns Magazine the rifle was originally designed to take m-14 mags, and the first handful of prototypes sent out to gun mags for testing were set up that way. Then Ruger decided 20 round mag capability wasnt needed, and switched to the current mag system for mass production. Hey, I learned something today!

The ruger takes single stack proprietary mags.

Actually, I believe they are AICS mags. Not quite proprietary, but not super common or inexpensive.

Alpha makes double stack mags. They also have alot less micro movement in the mag well. I did change out the bottom plastic for Impact Guns bottom metal. The Ruger poly mags are good to go.

I love my Ruger scout rifle. Supposedly the polymer mags are better than the metal ones allowing you to top load. I've no experience with them however but I wouldn't mind trying them out. I picked up mine for $850 after tax and dros brand new. There are a few in the marketplace that are priced well with what they are being sold with.

Plunger, care to share what you like about it? There is a used one next door to my work that has been calling my name.

I like the the overall weight and handling of the rifle. It has a good balance at the action. I've mounted a long eye relief scope on it and like my field of view with it. Ruger did a great job capturing Jeff Cooper's general idea and purpose of the scout rifle. I wouldn't hesitate on picking one up so long as the price is right.

There seem to be a fair number of these rifles that show up on the resale market because I think people impulse buy on a whim and then don't have any use for them. A good used price, depending on condition, would be 100.00 - 200.00 below retail. I think Turners frequently has them on sale for around 800.00 +/-.

I should have noted above that I just got a GSR this year.

I waffled quite a bit between it and the Mossberg MVP, but I really wanted the peep sights and the scout-mount scope. Adding those to the Mossberg would have equalized the prices handily. The polymer mags do work better than the stock steel ones, and they are also much more reasonably priced. For my needs, the GSR fit the bill. After I mounted a long eye relief scope on it, I really like it.

If you prefer a traditional scope mount, or have a M14/M1-A and want magazine compatibility, then the Mossberg may be better for you. I got to handle both at Riflegear, and they both appeared to be quality pieces.
