I normally carry 38 sp in it but if I'm camping or backpacking I'll load it with heavy 357 mag. I carry it in my front pocket or in a pouch on my backpack hip belt.

I'm in no way willing to carry a 40 oz revolver. I owned a bunch of various 357 mag and 38 sp revolvers and sold all of them all, everything from a 686, vaquero, blackhawks, sp101, gp100, etc. and all sucked for carrying especially in the heat we have here in so cal or in the sierras. I remember going deer hunting and after two days hiking in the mountains in 90+ deg heat thinking...I got to dump this f'ing gun off my belt! In that heat and high altitude, I'll carry the 340 or 642/442, that's it!

I think the only heavy revolver I'd ever consider buyng again would be a 6" Colt Python simply because I think they are beautiful, but only for range use, not for carrying!
Haha nice, sounds like fun backpacking throughout the woods carrying the old pistola. I shot my coworkers 6" Colt Python a couple months ago...thing was a BEAST!!!!!!

The 340 is super light weight and carries really nice but it hurts like a %^&$ to shoot 357 mag. in it. I figure if a bear is mauling me I won't feel the recoil

It's hard to justify the weight so it needs to be as light weight as possible or frankly I just won't carry it. Been there done that, a heavy gun is not for me.

The light weight is also one of the reasons I love the 77/357. If you think of it in terms of power to weight ratio...it's very efficient. The Rossi 92 isn't far behind.

Yes agreed, and yeah the Rossi 92 is pretty light weight too. I think 6 to 7 pounds if I'm correct.

Don't forget the Timberwolf pump .357, recoil is reasonable.
                    Great rifle for trombone action..

I have heard the 44 mag version (1,000 imported) had brutal recoil due to near 6 lb weight.

Didn't know that rifle existed, just watched a video on youtube on this rifle...AWESOME!!!!!! I wish I had one!!! But after doing some research on it, yeah they were Israeli imports and are no longer available here in the us for import. So these are rare and expensive rifles, but if I found one I'd have to pull the trigger (pun intended) and get one.

Thanks, yeah hopefully all goes well. Working with the bolt action, and loading .357 snap caps in the magazine works well so far. But I won't fully know until I take it out shooting, I will definitely keep you posted when I take her shooting.

Yes, the Timberwolf .44 kicks! Dad bought both the .44 & .357 at the same time years ago, when he picked up the Uzi carbine in .45 ACP. He collected stuff made by IMI, including early Desert Eagle pistols.

**Update** Hey guys! Finally took my Ruger 77/357 shooting today at the indoor range, it was AMAZING!!! My new favorite gun in my collection now, very light and compact rifle with nice checkering. Everything worked great on the rifle, the bolt was very smooth and the 5 round rotary magazine feed the FMJ reloads well. I noticed when working the bolt action though, you have to be firm with it and have a good follow through. If your light with it, then it won't feed right. As far as the shooting, .357's through this rifle have a good kick alot more than the .38's, but I enjoy shooting them both though. I shot low and to the left, so i'm going to have to do some more tweaking on my scope to better zero it in. But all in all i'm very pleased with my purchase, worth every penny and I would highly recommend this rifle to anyone who is looking for a quality rifle that is cost effective on ammo.

I'm glad everything went well today with your new toy.
Yea you have to be a little firm on the bolt, no big deal.
Enjoy shooting your new favorite rifle, but remember the big brother 77/44 could be just around the corner.
I have both, and they are defiantly my favorite rifles.
                                Happy shooting.
