    Rem 770 for $200??

...is the sale price at Dick's.

Thinking for a couple bones this might be a good trunk 30-06...

    What do you all think?

Ps. If they have the savage axis ii for the same price, I'm leaning towards the accutrigger

    No experience with the Remington
I have 2 of the regular Axis models though.223 and 243.I changed the trigger springs only, and the triggers are better than the accutrigger.IMO.They are very accurate as well.Yesterday.I think they were $319 and you get a $50 rabate=$269.
I cut and recrowned the 223 barrel to 16 1/4" for the truck. It still shoots 1/2"@100yds using 40g Vmax or 40gSierras.
From my lucky or past experience,I would go the Savage.

Adit:The Ruger is real good as well.Love my 22-250

You think like me, Coy80176.. I've been watching the ads for those two as well as the Ruger American, Marlin XL7 and the Mossberg offering. All reports I've read say that the Rem 770 is a poor quality gun. It looks like it is being phased out and will be replaced by the Rem 783. The Savage Axis is loved by it's owners.

I have the 710 which the 770 evolved from.

I've shot deer and elk with it with no issues.

It is not a 1/4 MOA gun.

Mine drifts high and right as the barrel warms.

But it gets the job done for cheap. A good starter or beater gun

          I would buy a savage over a remington 770.
I have never spent over $200 on any savage rifle though and I have a couple of them.

Go to a big5 and work the action of that Remington. Out of the box it definitely feels cheap.

It isn't a good rifle, but at $200, you can't go THAT wrong. You'll spend way more money feeding the rifle than the cost of the gun.

That's about $100 more than I would pay for one.

If you gave me a 770 I would give it back. A total POS.

                      ^^^^

I appreciate all the colorful opinions and sage advice.

I'm gonna keep my eyes on the ads watching for the savage sale. With a rebate the axis ii combo was 250$ last week, and I'm hoping it goes lower this weekend.

Wise choice. Remember that there are three models of the Axis.

AXIS - No scope or adjustable trigger
AXIS XP - Comes with a scope
AXIS II XP - Comes with a scope and an adjustable trigger.

Savage has a $50 rebate coupon on their web site for the Axis. It is good through the end of the year.

                        Good luck!
