Winchester 1917- bolt open slightly after fall

    Hello all,

I'm looking for some guidance for my Winchester Model 1917 rifle. I had it slung when I was treking through the woods and although it broke my fall, it also broke the action.

Now, when the bolt is closed, any pressure on the bolt will open the action just slightly and it of course won't fire. This happens a lot when I an in my normal grip. Prior to the fall it would close and stay closed.

I'm attaching two pics, one showing the bolt closed and the other showing how much it opens when touched.

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction about what might be broken. Thanks in advance.

Have you removed and disassembled the bolt since this problem began? Did you see any signs of something damaged? Also is the bolt still cock on close or was it modified to cock on open?

Can't see much from your picture. If it's "broke" have a gunsmith fix the broken parts. You probably should have a smith look at it.

sounds to me like you broke part of the fire control system or the striker. The back of a bolt on a bolt action gets a little sloppy after you fire it because the striker/cocking piece is no longer pressing down and forward on the sear. I'm betting you busted something in your trigger or damaged the part of the striker that the sear releases.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was afraid that was the answer but I wanted to ask before I go to the Smith.

                Are you mechanically inclined?
If yes I can walk you through the process with a camera in hand so you see what to do before you do it.
These actions are much beefier in the trigger area than a 700 Remington but stuff still happens.
You might try and flush out your trigger with a bottle of lighter fluid first. You might have some debris in the trigger and dousing it liberally with some Rosignol lighter fluid might flush it out.
The trigger on these actions is well supported and doesn't flop around like a 700 action does.

                  Hi LynnJr,

Yes, I've been through a pistol armorer course and I've worked on about 75 pistols doing various replacements and troubleshooting. I'm not familiar with this platform though. I would really appreciate a walkthrough video and any help you can give me.

                  Thanks in advance,

                  Andrew
