Remington 700 bolt release getting stuck?

    Hello all,

So I actually noticed this problem quite a while ago, but on my 700 SPS with 700P take off stock the side of the trigger seems to rub against the inside of the stock so when I pres the bolt release it gets stuck and after putting the bolt back in, it does not keep the bolt retained, what would be the best way to fix this? I probably could sand down the inside of the AL bedding block but would this compromise the integrity of the stock? Thanks!

Take a dremel with a carbide burr and GENTLY hog out the area in question.

Sandpaper will take forever and not be as easy to control.
You'll probably have to take about 30-40 thou, but just take a little off and try it....take a little more off and try again.
    Rinse, lather, repeat.

    Before all that though....
Try and remove the stock and replace it a few times to make sure it's not a misalignment easily corrected.
Also check to see that the trigger housing mounts straight and true to the receiver, I have seen some that hang a bit crooked and a bit of graceful tweaking in a vise with a crescent wrench might help (but gawd be easy and careful doing it that way).

Also, before you take to grinding and such, check the sear pin for interference against the bolt stop. That is the forward of the two pins holding the trigger to the receiver. I may be jutting out a little in the bolt stop cut causing your problem.

+1 to this. Here is my trigger installation video that I explain how the bolt stop and te bolt stop release lever works on the 700 trigger system. Hope this will help you understand it better.

edit changed the link in another post.

Thanks! i m playing with it now! could you double check that link? XD

So I actually checked it and its not rubbing against the stock, it looks like its having issues just pushing the bolt catch up... I m thinking maybe there's grit or something so I am going to try to take trigger out and clean it

Check the lever that rides up the side of the trigger housing and impinges on the bolt stop. I forget what it's called but check it for rubbing and interference.

Sometimes the tail of the bolt release that contacts the bolt stop needs a little bend to keep it from binding. It needs just a smidge of clearance in the right place. Play with it a little and you'll figure it out.

Sometimes, grit gets in between the bolt stop and the receiver. (clean it)
Sometimes, the bolt stops have sharp edges from when they were punched. (lap it on a flat stone and look at the lapping pattern)
Sometimes, the bolt release tab on the side of the trigger is not engaging the little hook on the end of the bolt stop, causing binding when you try to activate it. (re-bend the release tab as needed)

Looks like AR15 hit the nail on the head, I always lap the bolt stop/release and clean bolt stop/release slot of dried grease where grit collets when I do an action tune up.
