    Strange gun registration question

Hello everyone, I have a strange gun registration question.

I'm interested in buying a rifle (Winchester 94 if that is important) but I it has been passed around and is probably still in the original owners name. I know it has had at least three owners.

Is there any way for me to register this in my name?

    Thanks!

Go to a shop with the current owner and have them PPT it to you. Unless this rifle has been passed around this year, it was never in the original owners name(long gun registration only started in 2014), unless he registered it as an AW for some reason(and then passing it around would have been a big no-no).

It might be mine stolen in 1979. Be careful.

Sorry Merc, I didn't see your reply. The gun isn't in california right now, I might be able to have the current owner PPT it to me but I honestly doubt they would be willing to do it based on the past owner situation. I didn't know about the long gun registration, that might be a big help considering the gun was probably made in the 60s. It's just a simple lever action rifle that has been passed between friends and now family.
Is there any way to research these by serial number?

            No problem.
Have the seller ship the gun to an FFL near you.
The FFL will then transfer it to you and register it to your name with the state of california.

That's all I have to do? I honestly didn't think it would be that easy.

                Yes.
You will probably want to research what fees the FFL will charge for the transfer as different FFL's charge drastically different fees.
You will likely need the FFL to send a copy of his license to the seller of the gun.

In my experience if the seller is private they don't really care to see the FFLs paperwork. Additionally I don't know of an FFL who will actually send their paperwork to a non FFL, but they all can give you their EZ check number and you can check the database against the address you are shipping to.

You need to make sure the FFL dealer will accept guns from a private party. Some will not. Other than that, as Randall says, no brainer.

I think we must assume that the OP is being honest and posting in good faith. As the rifle is coming from Alaska then there is no problem with it being passed down through family or sold to friends without going through an FFL or being registered. It obviously must go through an FFL to cross state lines.

My FFL gave me a pdf copy of his license so I can just email a copy to people from out of State that I buy guns from.

Check the name on the post that Oceanbob quoted, it wasn't the OP. A lot of the spammers do copy/paste jobs from previous posts in threads or other forums with topics related to the one they're spamming on.
