    Help identifying this Mauser

From looking at a lot of pictures it appears to be a 1893 Spanish Mauser but I really have no idea. I was told different manufactures and different countries built guns like this back then so I am not really sure about anything. I was given this gun by my step father and he had never shot it. Other than knowing it shoots 7mm ammunition he does not know what it is either.

I have several other pics available for those who would like to try to help identify it.

Yes, it "was" a 1893 Spanish Mauser. {flat faced bolt bottom} Now it is a 1916 Spanish Mauser. Chambered for the 7x57 cartridge.

Bottom metal is very early 1893 German made. Rest of rifle could have been made by Loewe or DWM of Germany. Or Spanish Arsenal at Oviedo. Proof marks would tell if German made.

        Check here for Proofs

And here for more Spanish Mauser info.

        Hope this helps your ID

Thank you for such a fast response!

When you say "was" and "now is" Does that mean it was modified a long time ago or is that something people do now?

Where is the proof normally located?

          Any idea of its value?

          Thanks Again!!

That would have been done by the Spanish long ago. Are you sure its still in 7mm and not one of the Samco imported 7.62 NATO conversions? I thought the original 7mm M1916s didn't have the gas relief hole, although I could be mistaken.

              The barrel is stamped 7mm
If it was 7.62 would it be different?

Near the end on the bottom of the barrel would be a stamp with the importer name, origin, and caliber.

"Was" means that he believes it was modified to the 1916 Short Rifle standard at some point. It certainly looks like it was. However, while it does appear to be modified to the 1916 configuration, the crest on it appears to have been scrubbed at some point. That could mean several things. It could have been made in a hurry during the Spanish civil war. The later model rear sight lends some credence to that. It could have been pieced together at a later time out of parts that were in an arsenal somewhere, which would explain the much older, German-made parts. Or it could have been a Spanish model that was originally made for another country (like Turkey), and ended up getting bought by one of the surplus houses in Europe some time after WWI. Many of these guns were rebarreled and scrubbed of markings so that they could be supplied clandestinely by the various supporters of the different factions, and still maintain some deniability. The fact that this gun has the front sight protectors and other features found on the Model 1916, but doesn't have a crest makes me think that this may be one of those ex-Turkish or other country's surplus that was smuggled back into Spain in the early 1930s. Mostly because the Oviedo-made mausers are usually very clearly marked, even during the height of the fighting.

                      Thank you GTMB good info!
This is very interesting to say the least.
                      Any idea what its worth?
I did have a local gunsmith look at it and he said the rifling inside it was very good and appeared to have seen little use.
He did not know much about it other than that.

Is this the best forum topic to ask about value

                        Hi gentlemen..
Just checking if this is the proper forum header to ask about gun values.
I also have a Inland M1 Carbine that I am trying to learn about and get a value for and don't to be using the wrong forum..
Thank you all for the help

For older guns like this the C&R forum is a good place to ask.

But yes, spanish M1916 in 7x57, I have one as well, it's a good shooter.

                            I don't know if it is a $200 gun or a $1200 gun

                            Thanks for any help!

You've got a nice looking one...

The 7.62 cetme conversions are pretty cheap, but yours being nice and 7mm I don't think $300-350 is out of the ballpark.
