I may Ching the Ruger in the future (it's Rhodesian sling can always go on another rifle in the safe), but I'll more than likely leave my 527 Carbine with it's two-point Rhodesian setup.

I did not want a Mossberg or whatever takes AR mags. If that was the question I would had asked that....

I have bought a GSR 308 equipped with Weaver 4x scout scope and Ching sling. Done - I pick it up in a week.

One simple comment about the 660 "kicking the daylights out of me" has been taken that I am afraid of recoil.

I will not be putting a brake on it. My hearing and the hearing of my shooting partners are bad enough...I will be removing the flash hider completely and covering the threads. When I move out of state it will get a can. (to save the remainder of my hearing)

Reason I ask is that I have two orphan scopes in my big box ‘o parts - Leupold compact 3 to 9 and a Leupold Rifleman 3x9. (both matte finish which would look good with the GSR) Just wondering how those might work the stock Ruger mounts if the extended eye relief does not work well with my corrected vision.

Sure you can, but what's the point of having a scout rifle with a traditional scope?

The idea behind the scout rifle is a light carbine, chambered for a short action round with iron sights or a low power forward mounted optic. The purpose of the forward mounted optic or iron sights is so that the ejection port is clear of obstructions making it easier to single load, load via stripper clip, or clear potential failures. Mounting a scope on top of the receiver interferes with all of those things to some extent.

If it were me, and if I were looking to change the scope on the rifle you bought, I'd be looking for a long eye relief 1x-4x variable with German #4 or #1 reticle. Failing that (and still wanting something different than you have) I'd look at red dots (aimpoint micro?) or a nice set of peeps.

Sure the detachable box magazine of the GSR makes loading via stripper clip potentially unnecessary, but single loading and manipulation of stuff in the action is still a concern. In the end, doing those things with a receiver mounted scope is not hard, but doing them with nothing mounted over the receiver is easier.

I went with A Leupold FX II Scout scope on the factory rail. I also installed a Spec Tech trigger and Impact Guns bottom metal with extended mag release. I'm using both Alpha and Ruger poly mags. Both have very little micro movement/slop but the Alphas are slightly shorter. I have a Black River Tactical Covert compensator and a Rhodesian sling.

I have the FX2 on mine as well, but started with an Aimpoint red dot. How far out do you want to shoot? If less than 200 yards or so, i'd get a cheaper red dot like the Vortex Strikefire.
