      It's a spotting rifle case for a SMAW.
      It hangs off the side of the rocket launcher and is a 9mm round.

                Spotting cartridges are pretty common in military circles

                Never actually seen how oddball their cases are though. Interesting.

                  Never heard of that, weird. So am I understanding this right, they shoot the spotting rifle and if it hits the target, they shoot the rocket? So the 308/9mm has been modified to have a similar trajectory?

                      This type of thing has been around for many years now. The M48A1 Spotter/Tracer round is a 1 inch shortened version of the 50 BMG case and is used on the 106 mm Howitzer

                      The rounds will trace out and when they hit will put out a flash and white smoke. That's how the 106 gunners knew how to adjust fire onto their target, once they had the M48 on target they fired the 106mm.
