Dumoulin Mauser action from Sarco inc

    Hello folks,

I recently purchased Dumoulin Mauser action from Sarco inc. Does anyone have any experience with Dumoulin Mauser? Any recommendations on the barrel and stocks(wood). Thanks for your help.

Mauser are more commonly built into hunting rifles, the controlled round feeding is more for reliability than accuracy. Mauser tend to have longer locktimes than more modern actions so they have a little disadvantage in target shooting.

Dumoulin Herstal makes nice actions but for serious target work they will require a lot of work in truing the action threads, bolt lug lapping, action truing and bolt fit.

Fluting the firing pins reduces weight by 30% and speeds up the locktime.

The action you bought is a commercial 98 large ring Mauser and it will take triggers and stocks for 98 large ring Mausers wether they are military or commercial. The military actions had a cut-out for your thumb to load the gun when using a stripper clip. Some military actions also have a square back to the follower so you can't close the action when you don't have any more ammo without first pushing down on the follower.
Some shooters love that feature others prefer to grind a nice angle on there follower to allow it to close like a Remington.
The good new is your action has tons of aftermarket parts available for it and you already have a good bolt shroud and safety. The trigger is adjustable which is a plus but if you don't like it Timney sells them cheaply and installation is very straight forward. You loosen an allen screw then push out a short crosspin and put in your new trigger.
On most military 98 actions mounting a scope can be a small hassle because people grind off the military markings and you need two different heights on your bases.
The action you have uses one height for both the front and rear base.

Here is a quick write-up on lock-times but Tubb and Brownells both sell aluminum and titanium firing pins for the 98 as well as springs with more tension.

Winchester M70s have about .003 second, or 3 millisecond (ms) lock times with
their standard 23-pound firing pin spring. A 30-pound spring reduces that
to about 2.3 ms. With a titanium firing pin, lock time goes down to about
1.8 ms. These numbers are for the long actions; the new short actions have
lock times about 15% less due to their shorter firing pin being lighter.

Remington's M700 rifles have about a 2.5 ms lock time with their 26-lb.
firing pin spring. A 32-lb. spring takes that down to about 2 ms and the
addition of a titanium firing pin get it to about 1.6 ms. Again, these
are for the long actions; short ones have about 15% less lock time.

Ruger M77s have about 3.4 ms lock time and I don't know of anybody making
stronger firing pin springs for these long actions. I would guess short
actions would have slightly shorter lock times.

Paramount actions have about a 1.3 ms lock time with their 55-lb. spring
driving a light-weight firing pin about one-tenth of an inch to the primer.
That's the fastest production lock time for any rifle.

Anschutz 1400 series target rifles used to be about 2.3 ms. Starting with
their 1800 series, that got reduced to about 1.7 ms. Their new 2000 series
has about 1.5 ms so I'm told.

Mauser actions based on the original '98 design have rather slow lock times
of about 4 to 5 ms. Their long firing pin travel and weaker firing pin
            spring is the reason why.

            Springfield 1903s and Enfield 1917s have about the same lock time as Mausers;
            around 4 to 5 ms.

Some benchrest actions (Stolle, Hall, DGA and others) have lock times
about 1.7 to 2.1 ms. As these rifles are shot from rests, lock times can
be longer and all will be fine.

Edit: Your lock-times will affect offhand shots more than any other style of shooting. Phillip Yott a well respected National Champion level 1000 yard Benchrest shooter still uses a military action.

I just am a Mauser fan. I would love to have one. That is a killer price and you don't have to ruin a C&R gun to get a 98 action.
I have a 700, a Model 70 and a military 98 sorter. All shoot better than I do with the model 70 having the best trigger. They all shoot better than I do.

                Holy smokes Batman!

What is all these "lock times" and "lap the bolt" business? You guys are way over my head. Could you please give me some recommendations on barrel and stock, so i can have my gunsmith build a simple all around rifle? Thank you for all your help!

Get a Bell & Carlson stock with the varmint barrel channel and a Green Mountain/A&B barrel if you can find one. They made the varmint contour in 308 243 22-250 but they stopped making then last year. Or you can have your smith thread and chamber a barrel blank.

That conversation was based on your requirement of "target shooting", if you just want a plinking/hunting gun then the Mauser action will work fine, as-is.

I think the bolt head dia is already set for .30-06. I dont know if that means i can only build rifle in that caliber. I would prefer .308, but...
