    Need Help Choosing a .308!

    Sup guys,

I am interested in getting a bolt action .308 for mid to long range. I want it for target shooting and Urban/sniper warfare.
I have about $1,000 (give or take a few hundred) to spend on a rife, rings, and scope. I wanted to ask the community what they're thoughts were for this price range. I was thinking about getting a Remington 700 but can't decide which one to get. I really want a heavy barrel. I was also very interested in the Savage Arms rifles and the accutrigger; but yet again I don't know which ones are good, I am newer to bolt actions! I owned a Savage 110 .270 but sold it a while back.
I really want to get into longer range shooting like 200-500 yards maybe 600. Like I said previously I really want a heavy barrel and prefer a black synthetic stock. Let me know what you guys think

    $600 Remington SPS Varmint.
    $100 Boyds stock.
    $120 TPS base/rings
    $200 Bushnell 3200 tactical 10x40 mil/mil scope

A few hundred dollars more in the budget for the scope would really improve the project.

Look at Vortex Vipers or SWFA super snipers.
Whatever you get, make sure it has a parallax adjustment, mil-based reticle and mil-based adjustments.
Leupold are overpriced for what you get and you won't get what you should have at the price points you are seeking.

You generally do pay more for a USA made product. Support the USA and buy the Leupold OP!

The sub $1000 leupolds don't generally qualify to be marked as "made in the use" due to their use of more than 50% foreign produced parts/materials.

                Mechanical reliability trumps glass quality.
Great glass is a waste if the erector won't stay where you put it.
I would always stay with a Japanese manufactured scope over all the other Asian countries if I could only afford to use an Asian manufactured scope.
My competition rifles mostly have USA made scopes on them.

Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle with a Leupold scout scope. They have their own board at scoutrifle.org (IIRC)

I wanna say both, but you are right. A good lens is useless if it does not stay together.

I have done shooting, lots of microscopy, and a fair amount of photography. Good glass makes a big difference in all three. Maybe not for just plinking, or looking at generic sample, or point/shoot photography. But when the shot or the image counts, good glass can be the difference between a hit and a miss, missed photo, or not enough resolution in a microscope.

It is hard to explain till you have used mediocre AND good glass.
