Milo, I was looking at that as well http://shop.pacifictoolandgauge.com/...oducts_id=1450

What actual effect does using this piece cause?

As I looked through this thread and this thread the cocking piece and it's relationship to the trigger sear started to make a lot more sense. The idea (as far as I understand it, which isn't much) is that if the cocking piece contacts the trigger sear before the lugs are off their cams -while the bolt is closing- then you'll have an amount of "cock on close". This makes bolt closure more aggressive than it needs to be. Ideally the bolt should hand off the cocking piece to the sear just at the apex of the lug cams for the least amount of travel and firing pin compression.

I would not buy a cocking cam pre ground, it was just something that I was suspecting gave me a benchmark for most material removed before everything goes south. It would seem that 30thou might be much to much material removed in many circumstances with some triggers.

weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

An easier hand-off of the cocking piece from the bolt body to the sear is the goal.

I have done a whole bunch of these.
I have removed from only 0.015" to as much as 0.080".
Every combination of parts is different.
Different triggers have a different length sear nose that catches the striker.
I don't do this work unless the customer tells me they have no intention of changing the trigger.

This is to avoid a cock on close action if the hand-off is too early yes?

That's very helpful thanks. My thought is to try one or two triggers other than the CG I have and see if there is anything to be gained by any of them, then never change it. I like the CG, but it's a bit on the delicate side from what I hear, my only one is on a smallbore gun so it doesn't really matter.

Will do. I've got to get that bolt from you also.
