    Idenify this rifle?

This was my late father inlaws rifle. I have no idea what it is.
No manufacture or cal on it.
It has US under the scope mount and what appears to be a 3 digit serial number.
It's not in very good condition. I'd just like to find out a little about it.

    Thanks
    Bill

It looks to be a sporterized 1903 springfield.

I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

^This. It's been sporterized (very popular to do in the 50s & 60s).

This is a sporterized M1917 rifle. What strikes me a rather peculiar is the rear sight ears have been cleanly milled off for the scope base but the original stock was retained and crudely sporterized. Typically if they went to the trouble to mill the rear sight that also meant rebluing and restocking in a Fajen or Bishop stock. Maybe an unfinished project?

Looking at the action more closely, it might be a Remington Model 30. The rear bridge looks almost factory.

              Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

Maybe an ongoing project that never got finished. Get the metal done in time for deer season. one step at a time type project.

Why do you say it is in poor condition?
If the bore is decent it should be a good shooter --
