    Timney 510 / Rem 700

I ordered a Timney 510 from MidwayUSA last week. I just installed it tonite. It is suppose to be preset from the factory @ 3LBS.

My Wheeler trigger gauge reads 4LBS consistently.

Does the Timney require a "break in" period?
Or the Wheeler isnt that accurate?

No, it shouldn't require a break in period. You can adjust it yourself. I believe they have instructions on their website.

Adjustment instructions are included in the package WITH the trigger.

You're right. I guess it's been a while since the last time I adjusted mine.

I ordered the Timney with a factory 3lb trigger becuz I didnt want to make any adjustments on my own.

          Kinda defeats the purpose.

Could be the Wheeler gauge is off or maybe the trigger is 4lbs. If you can install it, you can adjust it, it is that easy to do.

I got a Wheeler gauge and I always get a different break when I try it.

I had the RCBS and upgraded to Lyman. The RCBS gave 1/2 lb higher readings. I trust the digital one. It wasn't accurate when the pull was < 1 lb

OK, guess I'll get some trigger time before I decide to do an adjustment.

Is there a down side to adjusting it too light?

It breaks too easily and has the potential to "waste" ammo/shots on tatget at the range or in the field.

I installed a "Calvin Elite" Timney trigger about a month ago on a 700 5R, comes set from the factory at 8 ozs.

Takes some getting used to, definitely for bench guns only. Even with some dry practice shots, first real shot took me by surprise.

For this trigger, Timney recommends a pull weight of 1.5-4 lbs. In order to get it below 1.5 lbs, you need to reduce the sear engagement. Reducing the sear engagement too much can cause the rifle to fire just by bumping it or closing the bolt.

It could fire when you cycle the bolt really fast/hard.
                            It could fire if dropped.
