light up the area , set up your camera and point of view and set it to burst or fire off a soft flash at a low setting to help bring in more detail . Also ND filter about 1-2 f stops behind will add more to the fire

Digital "burst" setting if your camera has it. Takes 5-10 shots in a second, kind of like a high speed camera.
smirnus, what ammo were you using? Was it heavy ball?

I would think you would be better off just taking a long exposure shot...

Manually setting aperture and then exposure to a second or two sounds like a better route... Pretty much guaranteed getting the shot vs burst (spray and pray) hoping the camera caught the frame you want.

As mentioned by BrianDavis, fill flash can also be used to bring out more detail but the rifle here basically provided the flash.
