Need help-base and rings for rem 700-got em, thanks!

    Greetings, team!
Picked up a new rem700 SPS .308 a while back and am finally getting around to bringing it into action. Recently ordered a Timney 510 trigger to avoid the present recall nonsense, and now I am thinking about scope base and rings.

My goals for this rifle are to use for hunting, and to start exploring longer range target shooting, eventually pushing it out as far as I can. As my skills advance, I will likely upgrade the rifle for more capability. As such, I would like all of my early purchases to be fairly high quality - not lookin for ridiculous expenditure, just to make sure I am investing in quality gear at each step.

I'd like to get it set up with a base and play with various scopes I have on hand before deciding on the mid to high end scope I will dedicate to it. Admittedly, most of the glass I currently have is lower end to mid, most in one piece mounts on AR15s and AR .308.

So what bases would you be looking at? I am bewildered by the choices.

    What rings to go with?

Can I use my existing 1 piece AR style mounts to switch scopes on and off in the interim?

Thanks in advance for your input.

If I were you, I'd go with Badger Ordnance base and rings. I've had great experiences with them. I have Leupold MkIV base and rings on my 700P and they seem pretty solid as well.

The only problem is you need to know what scope you're getting to know what height rings to order. Do you have a general idea of what scope you're gonna go with? You might also want to consider a 10 or 20 MOA canted base to aid your scope in getting out to the longer distances.

On the advice of AR-15 Barrells (Randall) I went with a TPS 20moa steel one piece rail and their HRT low rings.

TPS base and rings are the best for the price. SWFA has the best price on these.

No, I don't. That's why I want to get just the base at first, right away, but want to have a sense of what combo I will go with. Thanks for you suggestions.

Any name brand, 1 or 2 piece (2 piece leaves the loading port more "open") with 20MOA cant will serve your purpose.

The scope tube and Objective size will determine the rings (low, med, high) you buy.

TPS steel rings and base. Best bang for the buck.

                    ^^^this

you, in theory, could use the mount that the scopes are already in - but there is an almost certainty that they will be too high

This is the best quality/value short action right hand remington 700 picatinny scope base you can get:

The secret to bases/mounts/rings is that if it holds zero, you are generally fine. You don't have to spend a ton of money for an entry level rig, just don't get a made in China airsoft mount. Since the Remington 700 SA is so common, many of the major manufacturers make a one-piece picatinny base, which is what I'd get. Most will recommend a 20 MOA cant. Personally, I take a contrarian view that a 0 MOA picatinny base is preferred for a SA platform as I'd rather add a cant built into the mount. That way, I can fit a scope with a mount and generally park it and easily move it from rail to rail.
