    Howa 308 rifles

Okay I am in the market for a new 308 when browsing the local Turners, the Talon caught my eye. But have never seen one nor have heard of the maker. But for a grand with 4x16 scope. Was wondering if anyone has an opinion on them.

If I was you I would never spend $1000 dollars on a rifle with scope from a manufacturer that I've never heard of, but I'm not you

      Howa makes very good rifles.
They make the barreled actions for the Weatherby Vanguard which is an excellent rifle.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

          I don't know, I have a Howa 308. It's a great rifle. But for 1K I think I'd buy the Weatherby.

I paid $500 for my Howa 1500 20" bull barrel with picatinny rail mount, a Hogue stock and a nikko sterling night eater 4-16x44mm scope (which actually is a pretty good scope).
Later I bought the 10rd box mag conversion for about $80. Then bought the Bell&Carlson stock for another $225
All in all I have about $800 in this thing (not including the Trijicon scope that is on it now). I have only had opportunity to shoot it once and it was grouping 6" 300yd groups with a pretty good 15-20mph variable cross wind.
Looking forward to getting it out again on a more stable day to see how it does, put pretty good so far.
As for the Blackhawk stock - don't bother. You can do better as far as stocks go. And $1000 is too much for that rifle, at least to me.

Howa's are good rifles, I have owned two of then a .270Win and a .308Win pencil barrel. You will be happy with a Howa. I think you can build your own Howa rifle for less and have a better set up than the Talon.

The rifle is great! the scope is junk , the stock is well a stock. $1000 is too high for that rifle.

Well its the total amount dros fees taxes and so on. I am looking for something that my son will like to shoot. He doesn't like the ruger gunsite. He wants to learn how to shoot at distance. Biggest problem is I am 6-1 and he is only 5-8 arms are close to the same, he's a knuckle dragger. He shoots the ar pretty good. Just looking for some thoughts, and ideas. I am making this more of his thing. What he really wants to shoot is the 338 lapua. Told him getting rifle is not the problem, but ammo.

The Howa rifles I have seen that came with scopes came with the Nikon buck master, which isn't half bad, and a Hogue over mold stock. However I saw them at one of the sporting goods stores a while back in the low $700 price range, so a grand seems high for what you actually get. Just the rifle alone is about $500.

                        .
A little more background on Howa is that they also made an 870 clone for S&W in the late '70s who called it the Model 3000. It is quite a fine shotgun (again, as a clone of an 870).

Get the one that has a detachable magazine. Cant beat Japanese quality!

He wants to learn long distance shooting? Very simple answer.

Remington 700 SPS Varmint or Tactical. (I prefer the 26" Varmint)

Howas aren't bad either. But getting a solid base you can build off of will work better in the long run.

You could go howa axiom in. 308. It's got an adjustable stock. Good rifle. Shoots well but I'm sure the stock is not the best for long distance or precision. As for the scope it is not that great. But it's better than nothing
