I have both an H&R Buffalo Classic and a Handi-rifle in 45-70. I've found them to be simple, reliable, with decent accuracy and fun to shoot.

I've worked up some reduced power 45-70 handloads and my H&Rs have become very popular with my shooting buddies shooting the reduced power loads.

I just jailed a H&R Buffalo Classic; the store was closing it out and made me a deal I couldn't resist. I've been on a 45-70 kick lately and it the rifle feels solid and well made.

I plan on going with a tang sight similar to this... and maybe refinish the wood; it's a little plain.

Another plus with H&R is you can send the frame back and have it fitted with a different caliber barrel. H&R offers a variety of different calibers. At some point I intend to have my Handi-rifle fitted with a 30-30 cal barrel.

I have three Handi-Rifles 22Hornet, 223 & 45-70. All three are extremely accurate & reliable. Quit thinking and just get one you'll like it.

            Nice.
I too have been on a handi rifle kick lately.
I think I decided my next gun will be a 357 chopped to 16",
with a youth stock set....like the 300blk version, but no need for threaded barrel.

It would be fun to shoot that at Angeles range's pistol gallery.

Not the caliber your asking about but I have a Handi rifle in 500S&W and love it!

Thanks for all the response. I will be getting one. I do like the Buffalo Classic since I looked at one in Bass Pro. Since I cast for my other calibers and gauge, that 45/70 cal would be perfect.

The 500 S&W is also a good caliber to consider but I don't it's carried in the Buffalo Classic.

I had a Buffalo Classic in 38-55 great rifle, just make sure the two mating surfaces of the breech are clean and dry before shooting mine would open when even lightly lubed.

                          Here's mine:

That's a .45-70 "Trapper" Handi-Rifle, which was a TALO Exclusive. It's just a bit shorter than the standard model Handi-Rifle. It's more like a youth .45-70, which is a fun thought. When I bought it, I got it used. It had bad surface rust and the bore was coated with lead, so...I sent it to Mark Bunach (http://www.ocgunsmith.com/aboutus.html) and he did a bang-up job on the rifle. He scrubbed out the lead, removed the rust, gave the gun a thorough cleaning, and then I had him refinish the rifle in Cerakote "Armor Black". It turned out well.

Honestly, I was not a fan of the recoil using the factory wood stock, which is why I installed the Choate pistol grip stock with the thicker rubber butt pad. The weight of the stiff plastic stock and forend really helped balance the thing out. Plus, with the pistol grip, it points so much better! Yes, that is the stock designed for the H&R 1871 varmint rifles. But, who said it cannot be re-purposed, right? That rifle has been a welcome companion on many outdoors adventures.

The H&R 1871 Handi-Rifle series of guns are awesome. They are simple, reliable, close up solidly like a bank vault, are easy to clean, and are inexpensive. All in all, what's not to like? Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil
