Hello Calguns. I have a savage 111 chambered in 300 win mag. I just purchased a stainless 116 300 win mag and I don't see the need for two of the same caliber. The question is, can my current 111 action be rechambered in to a 338 lapua? I see that savage makes a 111 338 but I am not 100% sure if it is the exact same action just chambered in a 338. Is this possible. If not what caliber can I step it up to? I do reload and just want a because I can rifle. Even if it takes me a while to put together. Love the 300 win mag but looking for a little more horse power. It wont be a hunting rig it will be a lets go visit the cousins in Arizona and reach out type of rig. Thanks for any input.

The Lapua case is pretty big in diameter. We had a Savage 111 LRH in .338 Lapua come into the shop, and there looked to me like a lot more metal in the chamber area than on the 7mm Rem Mag that we also had come in (similar to your .300 Win Mag). Personally, I'd be concerned unless it was on the 111 LRH or 110 BA series.
How about a .340 Weatherby Mag chambering? Weatherby brass is about the same $$ as the Lapua brass, and performance is pretty darn close. Worst case, you could form H&H brass into the Weatherby chambering."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

The factory savage barrels chambered in 338 lapua have a bigger shank and will not fit your 300 win mag action. So you will have to find someone willing to cut a 338 lapua chamber in a small shank barrel blank. Some places wont do it but ive seen more than one built on a regualr action.
If memory serves you might also need a slightly bigger port to eject a live round. And I think ptg makes lapua sized bolt heads. 338 edge or even a regular 338 mag would be my move.Comment

Do the large shank 338 actions have the same feed rail cuts on the underside of the action and the same ejection port cuts as the standard long actions?Randall Rausch

Not sure about feed rail cuts but I am pretty sure the ejection port is cut bigger on the 338 actions. But its certainly possible since there quute a few guys on the savage shooter forum running a 338 lapua on standard long actions.Comment

well I do appreciate all the feedback. I am going to look in to the 338 edge and 338 win mag. I guess if it doesn't work out I could always just build it up in its current caliber. I must admit the 338 edge looks like a nice caliber. I don't know much about it. Thanks again CalgunsComment
