    .22 Hornet quest

    Hey everyone,

I'm interested in picking up a .22 hornet single shot or bolt action in the near future and I am having difficulty in finding one with a 1-14 twist rate so i can load 55gr .224 bullets. Any recommendations on anything out there new or used. Most manufacturers seem to not specify the twist rate which is a little frustrating. Thanks!

Try looking for a Thompson Center Contender they have 1:14 twist rate and can be had in 10" , Super 14 , or 24" rifle barrel.

I prefer the Super 14 barrel , scoped it keeps up with longer barrels in velocity and accuracy. Easy to carry too .

          I have a Ruger 77/22 Hornet 1st year production rifle with a 1-14 twist.

In my experience, the 50 grain bullets are about the heaviest you'd want to load. 55 grain bullets give up a lot of velocity and the 1-14 twist is not the best for stabilizing them.

The 40-46 grain bullets are really about the best choice, giving good accuracy and velocity.

There's a Ruger 77H target in Shadow Grey at Krausewerks in San Mateo. Ruger lists it as 1 in 14" rate of twist - looks like new and under $600.00.

savage model 40 is great. I had a pair, and sold one on calguns about 2 months ago. (was knocjed out to K-hornet... which is the way to go)

12 or 10 twist would be good for 55rg pills. 14" is all about 36-40.

THE STANDARD 22 HORNET CAN BE A VERY FRUSTRATING GUN TO LOAD FOR ACCURACY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
                  I would re-chamber whatever you get to 22 K-Hornet.
The Ruger 77 with the grey finish has to be one of the best looking rifles made but accuracy can be a problem.

The 45 grain Sierra Blitzking is the bomb. The Hornet doesn't have much power, 45 grain bullets are best.

BEST one to get...the CZ. its a repeater, awesome trigger, lightweight, and shoots 1/2" 100 yds out the box. before I made a K out of it. Evenwhile fire forming regular to K it would shoot a solid 1" at 100yd.

I traded away my Ruger 77H for a single shot Anschutz in 22 Hornet and tend to use the Horndy 35 grain VMax and 40 grain Sierra with Blue Dot and Lil Gun, haven't spent alot of time with the 45 grainers, got good results with some 46 grain Winchester bullets. I use small pistol primers instead of small rifle. I know folks gripe about what a PITA the Hornet can be to reload, but I've never had any accuracy issues related to the cartridge.

Using 50 or 55 grain bullets seems to me a bit heavy for the little Hornet.
