It's not that I doubt it, it's more like I'm not an expert with these and I don't have enough information to satisfy my curiosity.

I'm not an expert either. I've just read that a lot of them were re-chambered to 8mm-06. The only 98 Mauser I have is a ce 43 I bought at Big5.

An 8x57 will drop into a 8mm/06 with room to spare. The .333 case is longer than the 8x57, but it has a long neck.
Bullet in the muzzle test won't tell you much, cause it ain't going to show you a .001 difference in the groove.
Do a bubba chamber cast. Pack the chamber good and tight with light gauge aluminum foil. It doesn't work well enough to tell you "exactly" what it is, but it will tell you what it isn't. The .333 Jeff has a long case neck, and used a long 250/300grn bullet. So your foil chamber cast will show that if it is indeed a 333.

Jeeze, first it was CRS, then CSS, then, CHS, and now double dyslexia!
Sitting here with a pair of calipers, trying to plan out a carrier adapter to shoot .22 shorts, in a .22 Long chambered Win Model 1890. My brain is going to have a math explosion!
That Mauser is still wearing a military barrel. The expense of a re-chamber and re-bore would eclipse the cost of a re-barrel. If you were going to spend that kind of cash on it, you would have it in a nice stock. Soooo, my best WAG is, it's still in 8x57, 8mm/06 at best.

The "333 J" on the rifle is the serial number and letter block, you can see it in the first pic.

Although the letter looks much more like a script L than a J, but I'm in my phone so it's not the biggest screen ever...

If it was 333 J on the side of the barrel only then I might agree .333 Jefferies. But yep that is the serial #

I can't believe no one has mentioned the scope base and rings. Those are Maynard Buehler items, which are pretty desirable. I think they were very popular with the big game hunters due to their strength.
