    Remington 700 PSS - upgrades/advice/mods?

Hello, I bought this rifle several years ago and ended up taking a break from shooting for a little while but recently got the bug again and I want to take a crack at some longer distance shooting.

I was wondering what sort of mods/upgrades could I do to this in order to make things a bit more comfortable for shooting from a bench? I have a Savage Arms in .223 with a thumbhole stock and it's rather comfortable for me so I was thinking of something similar for this one. Any suggestions?

I'd also like to enable this to use that magazine that is shown in one of the pics. A friend of mine gave me the magazine but it doesn't fit in it's current configuration. I think I need this as well:

Shop rifle parts (2,741) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

Could someone confirm that thought? Any other thoughts or suggestions on what else could be done to improve this build? Thank you very much in advance. Apologies for any inaccurate terms I may have used.

AICS 1.5...comes with its own 5-round mag.

put some nice glass on it (vortex razor, bushnell HDMR, nightforce, S&B, USO, etc)
slap on an aftermarket jewell or timney trigger in the 1-2 lb range
muzzle brake so you can shoot a lot without getting banged up
    quality rings...dont cheap out
reload if you can and use 175+ grain pills (assuming you're using 308) and try varget, RE-15, 4064, etc. so you can tune your rifle
chrono your tuned load and use a ballistic calculator and then validate at various yardages to get your dope at the longer distances

That mag set up will work. You may want to also visit "Pacific Tool & Gauge" website for 700 parts and bottom metal, there's more than one brand that will work in that stock.

I have a Remington 700 PSS (or PPS, can't keep that straight) in 7 mm Rem Mag and pretty much never used it. I've "rediscovered it" and recently had a muzzle brake attached - Kleingunther, slim style matched to the barrel. Doesn't look like much but it sure works well. I'm going to replace the HS with a Bell & Carlson Long Range and switch out the trigger for a Timney. Stockys Stocks carries the Bell & Carlson for about $250.00, the Timney is about $125.00.

Not exactly "big buck" change outs, but I think they help alot.

You are pretty close to my shop then.

I would recommend against the HS Precision bottom metal as it uses only HS precision magazines which are expensive and hard to obtain at times.
The standard magazine used in most 700 bottom metal is the AICS magazine.
There are lots of different options for bottom metal that takes AICS magazines, including the PTG for around $100 that was mentioned above.
The stock will need some inletting work for any of the AICS compatible bottom metals to fit.
I do stock inletting for bottom metal.

I also do muzzle brake installations, trigger installations and oversized bolt knob installations.
All work is done while-you-wait so you only have to make one trip.
I can help you choose the parts to order so that you have everything in-hand before you come over.

700PSS (police sniper special) were old guns that were hand built in the custom shop. They had parkerized finishes, HS precision stocks and old style triggers. The PSS model was replaced by the 700P around 2006.
700P (Police) is a standard production model sold through the LE/Govt division with a parkerized finish, HS precision stock and the old style trigger which is more tunable.
700SPS is a whole series of 700's in a sandblasted and black oxide finish. They generally have horribly flexible plastic stocks. They come in sporter and varmint weight barrel configurations.

Could I schedule something with you and bring the rifle by so you can see it first hand and go over some things with me? I guess a sort of "consultation" meeting? I'd be willing to pay you for your time of course. A lot of what you mentioned I'm not familiar with (term wise) and I learn a lot better when I can be shown what's going on. Would this be okay? Should we take it to PM's at this point? Thank you again for your help as well as everyone else that's chimed in here.

Yeah, I ran the HS mag system for a while on a hunting/scout type rifle, and while it works fine, it is 100% proprietary. Go with an AICS based system and you have tons of options in terms of bottom metal and mags.

Make sure the bolt handle doesn't hit the stock.I own several and have worked on a dozen of these rifles and on 2/3 of them the bolt handle hits the stock.

If your wife is going to use it from a bench get a Protector #2 owl ear front bag for it.The bag fits the forend perfectly and it will help her groups.

With a lady shooter you want her to use the heaviest gun you own so recoil doesn't become an issue. The factory pad on the H-S stock is very thin and if my memory is any good it is glued in place.

If for any reason you remove the pad epoxy some lead shot into the buttstock to bring the weight up.

                      Replace the trigger.

                      Skim bed the aluminum block.

So far, the trigger, the stock, and possibly the bolt are the things to start with. Thanks everyone for their help and especially Mr. Rausch. Much appreciated!

Oh, after sending the PM, I realized that you might already be booked for quite some time but I wanted to let you know that I'm in no rush to get this done. At your convenience, please. Thanks!

Here is the result! MUCH thanks to Randall (AR15Barrel) for the installation of the break and adjustments. Thanks goes to Ross Schuler for the muzzle break itself.
