Went to Bass Pro in Rancho Cucamonga over the weekend with my Fiance looking for shoes, happened to check out the clearance guns just to see what was there and to my surprise there was a left handed .270 Savage 10/110 Trophy Hunter XP package for $400. I bought it. From what I've read the guns seem to be decent for hunting but the scopes are crap. So, how did I do? Will it work for deer and pig?

.270 will take just about anything you want down. You did fine.
Get a decent scope and ammo, and enjoy.Comment

You should be happy with the scope. I've got the same rifle in 30/06, with the Nikon scope. I'm very happy with both. The price you paid is probably about $100+- less than what they go for.
Try to leave your set up just the way it is, and save any money you might think about putting into it for something else you need or want.
Now get some ammo and a tag and go hunt.Comment

Should group well. Savage rifles are quite accurate generally. They may be close to zeroed but you still need to check/zero it in for yourself.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

It should come boresighted out of the box but the scope is likely not zeroed; it should get you on paper or pretty close. My Axis in .223 with a cheap Bushnell scope was about 2 inches low/right using the scope at 25 yds. I got it dialed in at 25 and then zeroed at 100. Results below from a thread I made last month:
4 shot groups. Target is a 12" Splatterburst. Center and 3 o'clock are Wolf Gold 55gr and 6 o'clock is PPU 55gr. There is a plastic push-pin between the 8 and 9 ring (4 o'clock) for size reference. The flier above the center was definitely my flinch:

I personally think you made a great choice for your first bolt action. I love my savage and it shoots great!Comment

What model of nikon is the scope? If it's a pro-staff that is a fine starter scope and can serve you well..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. It's like trying to teach Steve Wonder how to see. Not sure we're ever going to get there.Comment
