Please help explain my wacky test results (Savage 10)

Have a savage 10 in 308 that just had a barrel upgrade (22" thin -> 26" heavy fluted). I took it to the range to see how she runs and got strange results.

    Setup:

Nikon scope set to 9x, stock sitting on plastic bench rest rig (whatever they're called). It was quite stable. Butt of the gun was on a sandbag that I squeezed to change POA height. I was holding way under 1moa during the shots, I normally shoot palma off my elbows and have had better groups than my test.

I brought 50 beautiful rounds of Lapua brass / H4895 / 155 SMK bullet, but forgot that they were fireformed to my old chamber! They would not fit the new gun, so I had to use a box of American Eagle factory rounds (ugh).

    Scope was on tight.

    The strange results:

At 100y, the first three shots were less than 1 moa, then the whole group shifted about 2" to the right and I got a tight 5 shot group (~1 moa with 1 flyer). The next run gave me similar strangeness, one shot on target, then two shots touching each other 3" to the right, then 2 shots touching 1.5" left of those.

Also, the first 10 shots left very crisp holes in the paper, but the last 10 shots left holes that were softer and more ragged.

    Explanations?:

I really don't think the wind was strong enough to cause those kinds of results at 100y, it was generally blowing from directly behind me judging from the dust at the hill.

Could it be that this gun doesn't like American Eagle?

Barrel break in? It was a new, factory take-off barrel that I bought from a good supplier and had installed by Randall in Van Nuys.

What do you all think it could be?

I'd say you have a bad scope. I had a similar problem with a BNIB Falcon Menace. Kept chasing zero all over the map (within 2-3MOA) until something broke loose within the scope and i could see it inside. Worst experience I've ever had with having to get it warranted. Anyways, try doing a box test and I'll bet it'll never come back. to any type of zero. Or just swap scopes.

      What's a box test?

The scope was on my 308 for months, then on my .22 for years and it was always spot on, it never shifted.

Maybe screws got loose during shooting in your scope mount?

Scope mounts stayed tight, you think it could be the adjustment screws? It would be weird, maybe I try the test with my palma sights, but bench rested.

I meant to shoot the square but if you can't get a proper zero that would be kinda meaningless.

Sometimes scopes break. You can always swap scopes (if you have another one that is). If not try another brand of ammo. I really don't think American Eagle ammo is all that bad.

I know you mentioned that all the screws are tight but did you check all of them, mounts included? Perhaps a loose screw on the picatinny rail where it mounts to the receiver.

The barrel is completely free floated on a custom chassis.

                  Try some other ammo

Check all mounting screws and bolts

I've now loaded up a full ladder test batch. Four each from low to 1 gr over max (I'll watch for signs, don't worry), with bullets seated to 0 jump.

                      That is strange......

If everything is tight, in a chassis....

I would try better ammo first off and bring a 2nd scope to rule those two out.

As to 155's you just mentioned.... most people cant get them to shoot well. I tried in my savage with not much luck.

Also- not much experience with the 155 other than an initial tryout that didnt work out.... most smk's (especially the 175) like a 25-30 thou jump....

I assume you know well enough about this stuff, that you selected the 155 and an appropriate twist barrel?

My varmint taper savage never walked unless something came loose. Temp changes didnt do anything.

                        Scope or mount issues.

The only other scope I have is 6x. I could try that, but I don't know if it's going to be accurate enough for this kind of test.

It could be a straightened factory barrel that has stress in the grain structure. You roll the dice and take your chances with factory barrels.

Unless your chassis is a straightline type chassis put something between it and the plastic front rest. You can use a folded towel.
If that doesn't help pull the gun down and put it back together again making sure nothing is touching the chassis that shouldn't touch the chassis such as the trigger.
Next would be the scope but since you have as fixed 6 power on hand try it first.
                              Next would be the ammo.
Next would be the factory re-worked barrel.
