What's the difference between there two Rossi Rifles?

I was looking on Bud's Gun Shop website and saw several Rossi 20 inch .357 magnum lever action rifles. The cheapest one is this one: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...0+BRL+357+RING but there really isn't much on the description about it. Does any one that owns this knows if the cheekpiece and scope mount is removable?

That's a pretty big price diff. You'd think it would be the other way around..

I wonder if it has the dove tail for a rear sight? I don't even see that model listed on Rossi's site anymore.

It has the make offer button, so perhaps it's a discontinued model that Bud's is trying to dump. That's just my guess.

The second rifle you list the link for is shown on Buds as the R92-56001, which is currently in their catalog. The first link is for an R92-56002 which is no longer current, but its info can be found archived here: http://www.rossiusa.com/product-details.cfm?id=173

Note that the foam cheekpad on the R92-56002 did not even come with the rifle in 357/38Sp caliber - Rossi just showed a canned photo of a higher caliber model of the rifle in their catalog.

I think that the only real differences between the 56001 and the 56002 is that the 002 has the "saddle ring" on the side of the receiver, and it comes with the small rail section for attaching a "scout" type scope quickly and easily. I use a small red dot on mine. The 002 also comes with the standard buckhorn rear sight which you can install if you like.

I have an 002 model, and like the scope mount. As for the saddle ring, I take them off my R92's.

I would definitely go for the cheaper gun. It is discontinued but is identical in all the important respects to the 001 model. Plus you get the scope mount for free, and if you don't like the saddle ring it is removable with a couple of pairs of channel-lock pliers.

Rossi uses mystery wood from Brazil and I thing they make the butt stocks from a different tree then the forearm stock. I've had two sets stripped down, its crazy how different the wood is on the same gun.

It attaches with 4 screws. IIRC all of the R92's of barrel length 20" or longer are pre-drilled and tapped (for the round barreled guns. For the octagonal barrels I am not sure - but I will be able to tell you in about 10 days ). On the R92-56002 the rifle comes from the factory with the rail attached, and the buckhorn sight provided in a plastic baggy.

The rail sections are also available separately from Rossi, and I happened to have one to photograph:

EDIT: Note, the rail section covers the dovetail (but does not use it for added support) so you cannot have the rail AND the buckhorn installed at the same time.

Thanks for the advice guys. I seen the description of the higher price one states it comes with the rear sight. It's a great price... but I would prefer open sights. Just my preference. I think I'll keep the saddle ring but if I don't like it I'll do what you said tmh1. Very nice rifle by the way. I'm gonna see how low I can offer. lol Just hope the cheek piece is easily removable.

I had a .357 with the open sights, but I prefer a peep sight, so I bought one that replaces the bolt mounted safety. I'd get the rifle with the scope rail in case you want to add an optic or red dot, and replace the bolt mounted safety with this: http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.ph...&products_id=5

Like I said above, you should NOT receive the cheek piece with/on your rifle. AFAIK these were ONLY provided by Rossi for the larger caliber rifles, and not for those in 357/38 Sp.

Maybe the funky ones with weird cheek piece just weren't selling, hence the lower price for the more 'stuff'.

I pick it up 6/3, and hope to get to the range that day. And no, I have not had any issues with feeding in my R92's, with either 38 Sp or 357. I have fed them a bunch of different 38 Sp brands, jacketed round nose and flat point. And for 357 I've only fed them Critical Defense as I wanted to verify reliability with that single round type for HD use. The only ammo I haven't shot is LRN as I don't want to deal with potential barrel fouling issues. And with the softer bullet, maybe these could jam on feeding?

I'm thinking OAL and not bullet shape\type. Mine did well out of the box with 38 and some shorter 357 reloads I had bought from an indoor range years ago, not so well with factory mag loads.
