    Marlin 1895 SBL 45/70

First off, I wanna say these are some of the best looking lever actions on the market. They're very tasteful, modern renditions of great American classics. Because of this I've been looking for one for the past few years. Mostly to no avail as I've only seen them for sale on the internet for $1200+. But this is where there's a twist in the story line for me.

Recently, I saw one of these puppies for sale for $880 at my local gun store. After some haggling I got him to $800. I clearly pulled the trigger (pun intended) and now have one sitting in gun jail.

My question is... Does anyone have any idea why this one was going for so cheap brand new?! Did they recently drop in price or is it the whole Remlin scare that has them going for much less nowadays.

Thats about what they sell for. I bought one a couple years ago through Davidsons for a bit over $700 out the door. It was a total mess being a remlin so I refused it. The ones selling for $1200 are some of the very first SBL/GBL/ABL variants made and the last to be built by Marlin. There was very few made hence the high price.

Don't be afraid of the later "remlin" guns made by Remington. Mine is quite nice, with the exception of the screws- be aware, even using proper screwdrivers, you can uglify the screws. They use some kind of brittle pot metal mined from the slums of China for them now.

I'm still hoping Wild West Guns makes a screw kit sometime.

405gr loads kick quite soft IMO, and the Leverevolution is still quite manageable, just expect a lot of muzzle jump.

Thanks for the good insight. Still not bad for $800 though?

You couldve done worse. Who cares what you spent on it if you keep for years and enjoy the crap out of it.

I'm with you. Any opinions on which rounds have the biggest kick?

I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

To feel better about whatever the sale price was keep track o how much you spend on ammo. Soon enough the cost of the rifle pales in comparison.

Hahaha I can imagine. I'm a reloader though so hopefully it won't be nearly as bad

Ha ... that's not what I mean. That rifle is so much fun to shoot that you will end up shooting it quite a lot I imagine. Mine is going on 20 years and ~15,000 rounds and I don't shoot it near as much as I'd like.
